Kyiv— On 14 July, Metropolitan Volodymyr of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church received in his residence in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves the Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches of the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, who is visiting Ukraine on an invitation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

The international event “the unextinguished candle,” dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holodomor [man-made famine] of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, is being conducted this year. On July 10 Estonia took up the relay from Sweden. Upon visiting St. George’s Cathedral, he held a press conference in the metropolitan’s residence. There journalists mostly raised the question of the Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and the process of beatification of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Regarding the UGCC patriarchate, the Vatican diplomat stressed that this question is solely within the competence of the Pope and that in solving it one should take into account “the consequences of the proclamation of the patriarchate in the ecumenical sense.”

Kyiv—The celebration of the 900th anniversary of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv is to start on 11 July with the opening of a national sobor (council) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP). At a press conference on 9 July 2008, the head of the UOC-KP, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), stressed that during the sobor an “amendment will be made to the notion of ‘Rus.’” Patriarch Filaret said that “we should finally dot all the ‘i’s on what ‘Rus’ is, where it was situated, where it is and what it is.”

On July 6, 2007, in Kirovohrad, a cross was blessed on the site where in the near future the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist will be built, the first UGCC church in the region. The blessing was done by His Beatitude Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych. A pontifical Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Bishop Bohdan (Dziurakh), Auxiliary Bishop of the Arhceparchy of Kyiv, Bishop Vasyl’ (Ivasiuk), Exarch of Odesa and Crimea, and 9 priests preceded this. The Liturgy was celebrated in the Church of the Holy Spirit of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine. (In a basement room of the church with the agreement of the local Roman Catholic priest the Greek-Catholics hold regular divine services.)

Malyshev submitted a bill to the Supreme Council that would envisage granting religious organizations the right to found general education institutions.
