Kyiv— After two years of dispute, on 19 July 2008 a community of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) entered St. Catherine’s Cathedral in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv for the start of normal liturgical life. Two years ago the head of the regional administration ordered the building to be given to the UOC-KP, but supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and some political parties set up a blockade.

Dnipropetrovsk— The press service of the Dnipropetrovsk Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) has released a statement on pickets at the Turkish Consulate in Dnipropetrovsk at the initiative of the All-Ukrainian Orthodox Brotherhood of St. Michael the Archangel in relation to the upcoming visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople to Ukraine. Kyiv— Iryna Vannykova, press secretary of the president of Ukraine, at a press briefing on 21 July 2008 reported that events to celebrate the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus will start on 24 July with the president meeting members of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations and continue to 27 July.

Kyiv— Ukrainian customs workers took away videomaterials from journalists of the Russian tv company TV Center. The incident happened in Kyiv’s Boryspil Airport. Kyiv— On 16 July 2008 the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) listened to the “Address of the Patriarchal Sobor [Assembly] of the UOAC [Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church] to the National Sobor of the UOC[-MP]” of 27 November 2007. The UOC-MP Synod took into account the expert evaluation of the addressed assigned to the Theological Canonical Commission. Kyiv— The deputy head of the Secretariat of Ukraine’s president, Yurii Bohutskyi, stated that the large scale celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the baptism of Kyivan Rus will promote consolidation of the Ukrainian society. “The celebration is a great occasion to formulate ways to unify Ukraine, not only the Churches, but all of Ukrainian society,” said Bohutskyi. He also noted that Ukraine’s president, Victor Yushchenko, stressed and continues to stress the importance of such steps.
