Kyiv— A description of the celebrations of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus was prepared by the press-service of the president of Ukraine. Kyiv— One-third of Ukrainians consider the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) to be the historical, legal successor of the Orthodox church founded in Kyivan Rus 1020 years ago. This is shown by the results of a poll publicized on 21 July 2008 and conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology from 11 to 15 July.

Kyiv— After two years of dispute, on 19 July 2008 a community of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) entered St. Catherine’s Cathedral in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv for the start of normal liturgical life. Two years ago the head of the regional administration ordered the building to be given to the UOC-KP, but supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and some political parties set up a blockade.

Dnipropetrovsk— The press service of the Dnipropetrovsk Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) has released a statement on pickets at the Turkish Consulate in Dnipropetrovsk at the initiative of the All-Ukrainian Orthodox Brotherhood of St. Michael the Archangel in relation to the upcoming visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople to Ukraine. It states that the protest has no relation to the Dnipropetrovsk Eparchy of the UOC-MP or the UOC-MP in general or to any Orthodox community of Dnipropetrovsk. orthodoxy.org.ua posted the news on 19 July 2008.

Kyiv— Iryna Vannykova, press secretary of the president of Ukraine, at a press briefing on 21 July 2008 reported that events to celebrate the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus will start on 24 July with the president meeting members of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations and continue to 27 July.

Kyiv— As part of the national church and state celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine, on 19 July 2008 at Michael’s Square near St. Michael’s Golden-domed Monastery and St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv a ceremonial Divine Liturgy was celebrated. Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), presided, and the whole episcopate of the UOC-KP concelebrated.

Kyiv— Ukrainian customs workers took away videomaterials from journalists of the Russian tv company TV Center. The incident happened in Kyiv’s Boryspil Airport. Kyiv— The Patriarchate of Constantinople publicized special materials on the occasion of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine that has been posted on the official site of the president of Ukraine. Kyiv — The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has asked the public to report possible illegal and provocative acts aimed at starting conflicts on a religious basis and violating constitutional rights during the celebration in Kyiv of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan-Rus. Consequently, it renewed the work of a hot line, reported interfax-religion.ru on 21 July 2008.

Kyiv— On 18 July 2008, the day before the festive Liturgy for the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus, at the patriarchal residence in Kyiv a session of the Patriarchal Sobor (Assembly) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) met. Speaking about the meeting, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the UOC-KP, emphasized that the Patriarchate of Constantinople is the mother-church and so must help the Ukrainian church solve its destructive problems.

Kyiv— On 16 July 2008, John Palmer, the newly-elected general secretary of the Assemblies of God (USA), the biggest Pentecostal group in the United States of America, came to Ukraine. The goal of the visit was to further friendship with the Evangelical Christian church in Ukraine, a long-time partner of the Assemblies of God (USA) in many missionary, social, and educational projects.

Kyiv— On 16 July 2008 the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) listened to the “Address of the Patriarchal Sobor [Assembly] of the UOAC [Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church] to the National Sobor of the UOC[-MP]” of 27 November 2007. The UOC-MP Synod took into account the expert evaluation of the addressed assigned to the Theological Canonical Commission. The account gave a positive evaluation to the wish of the UAOC to continue dialogue with the UOC-MP about renewing unity in Ukrainian Orthodoxy.

Kyiv— Ukrainian Minister of Education Ivan Vakarchuk met with representatives of the country’s Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant churches on 17 July 2008 in Kyiv. According to the press office of the Christian-Democratic Union, Vakarchuk emphasized the importance of the education of children and youth and how the churches and the state can work on this together.

Kyiv— On 16 July 2008, the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), headed by Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), listened to the address of the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), of 26 April 2008. The synod admitted that, like the UGCC, it is disturbed by church divisions in Ukraine, but cannot accept the model proposed to unite the Ukrainian churches that are direct or indirect heirs of Volodymyr’s Baptism.

Kyiv— Members of the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), which met on 16 July 2008 in the residence of the UOC-MP head in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, listened to the “Address of the Synod and Episcopate of the UOC-KP [Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate] to the hierarchs, clergy, and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (part of the Moscow Patriarchate)” of 14 December 2007 and passed a decision to send a response to explain the position of the UOC-MP.

Kyiv— Civil order during the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the baptism of Kyivan Rus will be secured at the appropriate level. This was reported on 17 July 2008 at a press-conference by the assistant minister of internal affairs of Ukraine, Oleksandr Savchenko.

On 27 July 2008 at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv (metro station Livoberezhna, Mykil’sko-Slobids’ka St., 5), a celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine will take place. The celebration will begin at 9:00 with a pontifical Divine Liturgy at which Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), will preside.
