Ukrainian Catholic Bishop in Canada Passes Away

Sakatoon, Canada— Bishop emeritus Michael Kuchmiak rested in the Lord on 26 August 2008. He was born in Ukraine in 1923 and eventually served as auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia, USA, and apostolic exarch in Great Britain, and his resignation from active ministry in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (known in the diaspora as the Ukrainian Catholic Church) was accepted in 2002.

The Liturgy on the occasion of the opening of the church was led by Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), on 25 August 2008.

The participants approved a joint address to political parties, civic organizations, religious denominations, and residents of far eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Region on “giving a helping hand” to people who suffered from “the terrible natural disaster [flood] which took place on 23-27 July 2008 and did considerable damage to fellow citizens in the western regions of our country.”

Zarvanytsia-Kharkiv—On 20-22 August 2008, clergy and laity of the Kharkiv and Poltava Eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) organized the third pilgrimage to the indulgenced pilgrimage center of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in western Ukrainian Zarvanytsia, Ternopil Region. On 21 August, according to a previous agreement with the Ivano-Frankivsk Eparchy of the UGCC, the pilgrims passed to the dean of the Rohatyn Deanery of the UGCC, Fr. Dmytro Bihun, aid gathered for victims of the flood in western Ukraine. The gathered aid will be distributed to residents of the Rohatyn district who suffered the greatest damage.

That evening, a solemn religious procession to the memorial to the Holodomor at St. Michael’s Square was organized. The heads and authorized representatives of various Ukrainian churches there celebrated a requiem for the victims of the man-made famine.

On August 17, 2008, the religious community of St. Demetrius the Great Martyr of the city of Fastiv celebrated the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus’-Ukraine. On this occasion Most Rev. Bohdan (Dzyirakh), Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Kyiv, came to Fastiv. The celebration started with a pontifical Divine Liturgy. Chernihiv—Approximately 1000 people came on 16 August 2008 to the site where residents of northern Ukrainian Chernihiv were baptized in a lake 1020 years ago.
RISU correspondent Lubov Potapenko assumes that this holy site of Chernihiv has not been venerated in this way for many decades. At least, this was not possible during Soviet times, even though a memorial tablet commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus was installed near the lake.

Madrid (Spain)— The Christian camp “Called by the Father’s love” was organized on 31 July to 10 August 2008 as part of the program “The spiritual world of the child” for Ukrainian children and teenagers in Spain. The camp was organized by the Catechetical-Pedagogical Institute of the Ukrainian Catholic University and the Patriarchal Catechetical Committee of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) with the blessing of Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna). Co-organizers were Fr. Ivan Lypka (pastor of the Ukrainian community in Madrid) and the headmistress of the Ukrainian school of the town of Alcala, Oksana Bats.

Personal Belongings of Halych Church Leaders to Be First Exhibited in Lviv

Lviv—On 24 August, Ukraine’s Independence Day, at the A. Sheptytsky National Museum in western Ukrainian Lviv, the ceremony opening an exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the renewal of the Halych Metropolitanate (1808-2008) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) will be held. The personal belongings of metropolitans Sylvestr Sembratovych (1885-1898) and Andrey Sheptytsky (1901-1944) and patriarchs Josyf Slipyj (1944-1984) and Myroslav-Ivan Lubachivski (1984-2000) will be exhibited for the first time. zaxid.net posted the news on 20 August 2008.
The exhibition is a joint project of the A. Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv, the Lviv Archeparchy of the UGCC, the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion, and the Lviv Historical Museum.
