Kyiv—The Hierarchical Council of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) passed a resolution to open a residence for the head of the ROC, Alexis II, in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. According to the information of www.nr2.ru, which references the Moscow Patriarchate’s site, the hierarchical council supported the proposal of the head of ROC to found a residence at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves in Moscow and a patriarchal residence in Kyiv in order to “strengthen the inter-connection between the two capitals of the Russian Orthodoxy.”

The question, issued from a meeting of Yulia Tymoshenko with the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations of 11 April 2008, was included in the agenda of the board meeting following the government’s instruction. Representatives of the Secretariat of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) were invited to participate in the discussion.

On June 26-30, 2008, the annual meeting of secretaries of the Episcopal Conferences of Europe is happening in Spain. The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church is represented at this forum by Bishop Bohdan (Dziurakh), Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC. According to information from Bishop Bohdan, the main theme of the conference (every annual meeting has a main theme) is: "The religious situation in Europe. Between secularization and the search for meaning and spirituality." "The theme reflects those challenges which today stand before the Church in Europe: on one side is the continuation of the process of secularization, on the other is the ongoing search for religious experience. Exactly those questions will be considered at the meeting of this year," the Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC explained.

Kyiv— On 25 June 2008, the press-service of the State Committee on Nationalities and Religions released a statement outlining the mistakes of Patriarch Alexis II’s speech at the Hierarchical Council when he said that "the new wording of the Statute of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) comes into effect upon the approval of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).” Representatives of the State Committee of Ukraine consider the statement of the patriarch as one that questions the competence of the State Committee on Matters of Nationalities and Religions, which registered the amendments to the Statute of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Representatives of the committee stress that the legal and canonical status of the UOC, prescribed in the Statute of the ROC, confirm that the Statutes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (which is self-governed and has the right of extended autonomy) is approved by its head (Metropolitan Sabodan - RISU) and then endorsed by the Moscow Patriarchate. As for the Synod of ROC, according to the Statutes of ROC and UOC it has no power to approve the Statutes.

Kyiv— On 19 June 2008, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and the Naval Military Forces of Ukraine signed an agreement regarding pastoral care for navy personnel at the Ukrainian Naval Military’s headquarters. The UGCC press-service reported that the agreement was initiated by the UGCC Curia on Matters of Pastoral Care for Police and Military Forces of Ukraine and received positively by the Navy's leadership.

The session was headed by ROC Patriarch Alexis II; permanent members of the Holy Synod – including Hierarchs from Russia, Belarus and Moldova, – Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), and temporary Hierarchs from Uzbekistan and Latvia also attended, according to orthodoxy.org.ua.

Hryshchenko, at his residence at the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves. The secretary of UOC-KP Head, Bishop Oleksandr Drabynko of Pereyaslav Khmelnytskyi and the head of the Department of External Church Relations of the UOC, Archimandrite Kyryl Hovorun also attended, according to the UOC press service.

On June 18, 2008, at the initiative of Assistant Minister of Defense of Ukraine Volodymyr Antonovych Dibriva, on the premises of the Ministry of Defense a meeting of the military administration with the following representatives of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church was held: Bishop Mikhail (Koltun), head of the Department of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC for Pastoral Care in Power Structures of Ukraine; Fr. Lyubomyr Yavorskyi, assistant of the department; and Fr. Stepan Sus, head of the Center of Military Chaplaincy of the Lviv Archeparchy of the UGCC. During the meeting the parties discussed modern conditions in the area of military chaplaincy and outlined future prospects for the subsequent cooperation of the Church and the Administration of the Military Forces of Ukraine in this direction. During the meeting Bishop Mikhail underlined a positive point in that the awareness of the need to develop the military chaplaincy is not only an initiative of the Church hierarchy but the fact that the importance of the role of the priest in work with personnel of the Military Forces is supported by the authorities of the Ministry of Defense.

Odesa—The Department of Protection of Objects of the Cultural Heritage of the Odesa Regional State Administration received a grant from the Fund of Anastasios Leventis (Cyprus) for the implementation of a project of restoration of an architectural monument of national significance, the (Greek) Church of John the Baptist. The church, built in the 13th-17th centuries, is located in the town of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi.
