Russian Church Denies Constantinople Negotiations on Ukraine

30.03.2006, [16:47] // Orthodox //

Moscow- Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, secretary for inter-Orthodox relations of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), has stated that the ROC is not aware of any activities by the commission of the Patriarchate of Constantinople on the Ukrainian problem. Commenting on a report that this commission “conducts talks with the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv, and the clergy of the Kyivan Patriarchate,” the priest underlined that “no negotiations have been held with it.” interfax-religion.com posted the news on 29 March 2006.

In a talk with an Interfax correspondent, Fr. Balashov also said that no answer has been received yet to the request sent to Constantinople a year ago concerning statements made by Archbishop Vsevolod (Majdanski) of Skopelos about the refusal to recognize the incorporation of the Kyivan Metropolitanate into the Moscow Patriarchate in the 17th century.

Quoting cerkva.info, RISU reported earlier that Ukrainian President Victor Yuschenko asked the Patriarchate of Constantinople for its intervention and the patriarchate set up a commission made up of Holy Synod Chief Secretary Archimandrite Elpidophoros and Archimandrite Athenagoras (Chrysan).

interfax-religions.com also writes that “Yuschenko’s open support for the Kyivan Patriarchate inspires to energetic actions” aimed to “recognize Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine, who was excommunicated by the Moscow Patriarchate.”
