Kharkiv Officials Discuss Church-State Relations

27.01.2006, [11:02] // Church-state relations //

Kharkiv – The Regional Administration in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region (KRA) held an extended session of the Department on Religious Matters (DRM) within the KRA. The session, titled “On church-state relations in the Kharkiv region and the work of the DRM in 2005,” was conducted by Yaroslav Yushchenko, deputy head of the KRA. kharkivoda.gov.ua posted the news on 24 January 2006.

Present at the meeting was Ihor Bondarenko, director of the Ukrainian State Committee on Religious Matters, officials of the Kharkiv City Council and Kharkiv local councils dealing with church-state relations, as well as representatives of local administrations.

According to information from Viktor Levchuk, head of the DRM of the KRA, the Kharkiv region has 54 denominations, churches and religious movements, and 732 religious organizations. They include 9 spiritual departments, 700 religious communities, 7 monasteries, 1 brotherhood and 8 spiritual schools. 71.2% of religious organizations are situated in 27 districts of the Kharkiv region and the remaining 28.8% in the city of Kharkiv.

Levchuk noted that, according to data provided by leaders of religious communities in the Kharkiv region, 550-650 thousand people visit churches and houses of prayer on religious holy days. Social surveys show that approximately 50-52% of the population in the east of Ukraine identify themselves as believers. The Kharkiv region is home to nearly 1.5 million believers.

Levchuk pointed out that the KRA, together with the local administrations, is fulfilling the common national policy concerning religion and the church. The authorities are making efforts to provide better financial support for the church, to return church buildings and other church property to the faithful, and to restore churches. Thus, from 1992 to 2005, there were 75 worship and church buildings constructed and opened for use.
