Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine to Receive Official Status

24.09.2005, [02:40] // Orthodox //

Kyiv – The Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine (UOCU) will be officially registered by the Ministry of Justice and will receive the status of a social organization, as Valerii Kaurov, the new president of the UOCU, reported at a press conference held in Kyiv. Kaurov said the registration of this organization is very important because the Orthodox have a strong intention to more actively participate in the social and political life of Ukraine. pravoslavye.ru posted the news on 19 September 2005.

Kaurov said: “Now we won’t have to ask the parties to help adopt this or that law. We will try to do that by ourselves. Earlier, we were mostly concentrated on tackling regional problems and were not dealing with the general Ukrainian ones. Unfortunately, Orthodox society did not take any preventive measures against the move of the Greek Catholic residence from Lviv to Kyiv.”

In the nearest future the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate are planning to conduct protest demonstrations in Kyiv against the opening of courts of Constantinople on the territory of Ukraine. In particular, Kaurov informed that the UOCU is going to picket the Turkish Embassy, as Patriarch Bartholomew is a citizen of Turkey.
