Lutsk – The regional organization Freedom addressed Volodymyr Bondar, head of the Volyn Regional Administration, with the request to break off talks regarding the transfer of the former tower of a castle in northwestern Ukrainian Lutsk to a synagogue. RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 16 September 2005.
Vadim Rabinovich, a Jewish leader in Ukraine, was negotiating the issue of the transfer of this monument of the 15th century with the Volyn governor during his latest visit to the region. The Lutsk Jewish community is one of the largest and oldest in Ukraine.
The tower of the Okolnyi Castle was given to the Jews by King Casimir of Poland in 1447. The building was reconstructed in the Renaissance style. It is one of the most beautiful and most valuable synagogues in the world. After World War II the building of the synagogue held the Dynamo Sports Society, which reconstructed the ruined building and equipped the sports complex in 1966. Since that time, restoration has been conducted with the funds of the society.
According to Oleh Stadnyk, director of the Dynamo Sports Society, during his visit Rabinovich did not want to speak with the present owners of the building. Nevertheless, the representatives of the Dynamo Sports Society are ready to give the worship structure in exchange for the construction of a new modern gymnasium.
