Ukrainian Orthodox Urge National Bank not to Coin Image of Mother of God

29.07.2005, [00:24] // Orthodox //

Kyiv, 27 July 2005, Interfax-- The Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods in Ukraine has appealed to the president of the National Bank to abandon the idea of issuing a commemorative coin called “The Protecting Veil.” The Orthodox have issued a statement calling to take such a step with responsibility and consideration to avoid profaning and mocking Christian sacred items.

”The reproduction of the holy faces of Christ and the Most Holy Mother of God on coins is an act of disregard for the religious feelings of Orthodox Christians,” says the Union’s statement.

The authors of the document warn the National Bank leaders about “the moral inadmissibility of reproducing a holy image on coins.” They believe the representation of churches dedicated to the Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God will be more appropriate and will testify to a respectful attitude towards the religious feelings of Orthodox citizens.
