Lviv—The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) together with other traditional churches will strongly defend the teaching of the subject of Christian ethics in Ukraine’s schools and protest “ethics,” which is proposed by the country’s Ministry of Education. This was the subject of a press conference held on 25 May 2005 in Lviv at the residence of the head of the UGCC.
According to Bishop Sofron Mudriy, head of the UGCC’s Synodal Commission on Theological Education, the next session of the All-Ukraine Council of Churches and Religious Organizations will take up this issue. There are already previous agreements with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, Roman Catholic Church, and Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate regarding the common defense of teaching the subject “Christian ethics,” the content of which has nothing in common with catechism, as some mistakenly consider, said the bishop.
The goal of Christian ethics is to help students to know Christian values and the difference between good and evil, said Sr. Luiza Ciupa, head of the UGCC’s Catechetical Commission. Catechizing, she continued, is a denominational matter and should be conducted outside the school.
Also participating in the conference were the heads of the UGCC’s Peace and Justice Commission and Commission for Schooling Matters.
