Sevastopol – A new film about the 19th century Cathedral of St. Volodymyr in southern Ukrainian Khersones will be released in early spring. Filming was completed recently, and director Ihor Krasovskyi talked about the film in a story posted on Pravoslavie.ru on 26 January 2005.
The Cathedral of St. Volodymyr was built in late 19th century on the site where Prince Volodymyr embraced Christianity in 988. The cathedral suffered during World War II: Hitler’s soldiers mined it and blew it up during the occupation of Sevastopol. Ruined by the explosion, the cathedral stood for several decades in a severely damaged condition. Only in the 1990s did repair begin.
“I decided to make a film about St. Volodymyr’s 15 years ago,” said Krasovskyi. “In the meantime, I’ve collected many unique materials: photos of the ruined cathedral taken by the Germans during the occupation, pictures of the cathedral’s ruins in the early 1990s, and all following reconstruction stages.”
The new film will run almost two hours in length. It will include footage of Russia’s and Ukraine’s presidents visiting the church under reconstruction. Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexis II will also participate in the movie, telling viewers about the cathedral and the role of Khersones for Orthodoxy.
“We have already started editing the film. A movie like this will be in great demand: thousands of pilgrims visit the Cathedral of St. Volodymyr every year and every one of them wonders why there are so few materials on the church’s history,” Krasovskyi said.
