Lviv – On 28 July 2004, National Deputy Oleksa Hudyma revealed the results of the first public-opinion poll conducted among the faithful and the supporters of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) concerning the patriarchate of the UGCC. The survey was conducted by the Information Center of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences at the request of the social movement For the Patriarchate of the UGCC and the Blessed Mother Teresa Welfare Fund.
The results of the survey reveal that 40% of Greek Catholics have not heard that Patriarch Josyf Slipyj, in his testament written 35 years ago, called upon the faithful of the UGCC to demand the official status of patriarchate. Almost 18% of respondents believe the UGCC has the status of patriarchate already. 80% of the Greek Catholics react positively to the Pope giving the status of patriarchate to the UGCC. 70% of the faithful and the supporters of the UGCC believe that little attention should be paid to the opinions of other churches, the Moscow Patriarchate in particular, concerning the recognition of the UGCC patriarchate.
According to Hudyma, the survey did not give a full picture because it was carried out only in six regions of Ukraine and did not take into account the faithful and supporters of the UGCC living abroad.
