Kyiv— After two years of dispute, on 19 July 2008 a community of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) entered St. Catherine’s Cathedral in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv for the start of normal liturgical life. Two years ago the head of the regional administration ordered the building to be given to the UOC-KP, but supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and some political parties set up a blockade.
UOC-KP Bishop Ilarion (Protsyk) of Chernihiv and Nyzhyn and Bishop Matfei (Shevchuk) of Drohobych and Sambir celebrated a pontifical Liturgy on 20 July.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Ukraine in the Chernihiv Region, the transfer of the church to the faithful occurred without incident. On 18 July representatives of the UOC-KP community informed the MIA of their intention to enter the church on 19 July to celebrate Liturgy in the church that had been legally transferred to them. Police Colonel Ivan Katerynchuk, head of the regional administration of the MIA, ordered a police unit to secure order in the area.
