Lviv— On 9-15 June 2008, an ecumenical social week is to be held in Lviv. The event is organized by the Institute of Ecumenical Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University, the Lviv City Council, and the Lviv Regional State Administration in association with the World Council of Churches (Geneva), the “Justice and Peace” Papal Committee (Rome), the International Charitable Foundation “Ukraine 3000” (Kyiv), the Lviv Association of Credit Associations, the Institute of Religion and Society of UCU, and others. Notable participants include Kateryna Yushchenko, the head of the Supervisory Council of “Ukraine 3000”, and Patriarch Lubomyr Husar, the Head of the UGCC.
According to the Institute of Ecumenical Studies website, the event has three main objectives are: 1) joint work of Christian and Jewish social organizations to improve rapport; 2) presentation of modern Christian social doctrines with concrete solutions to apparent policy problems; 3) encouraging youth to become involved in Christian social organizations.
The week will include an academic conference for social organizations working with disabled, homeless, and elderly people entitled “Ukrainian Cooperative Movement”. One of the main objectives of this training seminar is to help such organizations find partners, raise funds, and promote social and ecumenical work.
A number of guests from France will share their Western European perspectives and experiences on Christian social policy. In particular, the event will be attended by the President of Social Weeks in France, ex-Secretary General of the International Monetary Foundation, Michel Camdessus.
The Social Ecumenical Week will also include a Cultural Ecumenical Festival.
