Sumy— Head of the Sumy Regional State Administration Mykola Lavryk met with Bishop Stepan Menko of the Donetsk-Kharkiv Exarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on 8 May 2008 to discuss church-state problems as they pertain to the UGCC. In particular, Bishop Stepan asked the regional head to address the issue of land allocation for the construction of a UGCC church in Sumy and of renting a building for parishioner receptions in Romny.
Lavryk promised his assistance. “I adhere to the consistent state policy and will in all ways possible attempt to ensure equal treatment of all churches in the Sumy region and equal rights to freedom of worldview and confession for all parishioners,” assured Lavryk.
Sumy, Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv all fall under the jurisdiction of the Donetsk-Kharkiv Exarchate.
