Simferopol–– A young man was apprehended in the village of Zhovtneve located in the Pervomaiskyi District of the Crimea after he and two other unidentified youth attempted to desecrate a mosque. Interfax news agency reported the story in reference to the press service of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis (Council).
The Public Prosecutor of the Pervomaiskyi district, Serhii Volynkin, stated that the two escapees have been identified and are being pursued. Appropriate background checks are also being conducted and initiation of legal proceedings is being considered according to Part 2 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code re: hooliganism.
The local Muslim Kipchak community’s head, Seitbekyr Abdishev, lauded the instinctual actions of a local witness. “He immediately called the neighbors and police,” he reported, “and one of the perpetrators was arrested on the spot.”
Later that day, a relative of the arrested vandal fixed the broken mosque door.
