Kyiv – In an explanatory note to a bill on the assurance that words spoken in holy confession will be held in complete confidence, Ukrainian National Deputy Marushchenko, author of the bill “On the introduction of changes to Ukraine’s Criminal Code concerning the divulging of secrets at confession,” aims to secure the rights of citizens, ensuring that priests do not divulge confidential information. In particular, the bill initiates changes to Article 69 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, banning the priests from giving witness to the information they receiv during confession. RISU’s Ukrainian-language web page reported the story on 28 January 2008.
