Only UOC USA Head Can Restore Autocephalous Orthodox Unity, Says Lviv Brotherhood

Lviv – Only Metropolitan Constantine [Kostiantyn Bahan], head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (UOC USA), can restore the unity of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in Ukraine. So says an open letter of the Lviv Region Brotherhood of St. Andrew the First-called Apostle of the UAOC dated 7 March 2007.

In the letter, the brotherhood states that “the episcopate of the UAOC, raised on the synodal traditions of the Moscow Patriarchate, is neither able to fulfill the decisions of its own national sobor [assembly] nor to lead the church out of the canonical crisis.” Therefore, according to the brotherhood, the calling of a regular national sobor, headed by Metropolitan Constantine, is necessary for the revival of the unity of the UAOC in Ukraine.

Some eparchies of the UAOC in Ukraine recognize Metropolitan Constantine as the spiritual leader of their church.

The open letter was signed by Taras Dmytryk, head of the Lviv Region Brotherhood of St. Andrew the First-called Apostle.
