Uzhhorod – On 19 November 2006, several churches in southwestern Ukrainian Uzhhorod, Transcarpathia Region, organized and conducted Bible Day for residents of the gypsy camp in the village of Serednie.
Honored guests, representatives of the Ukrainian Bible Society (UBS), were invited to the holiday. The UBS presented all participants with Bibles and biblical literature, but the most precious present, according to Stas Matvienko, director of the VitaGraf Studio, was a dramatic audio recording of the New Testament.
“God loves us all, regardless of who we are. I know he died for the Gypsy people, too. Like all ethnic groups living in Ukraine, we have a full right to have the Bible in our native tongue,” said Yosyp Latsko, a minister in the Gypsy church.
For several years the UBS has been distributing Bibles and biblical literature among the Gypsies. The growing need for the Gypsies to learn the word of God was the reason why the UBS recorded the New Testament in one of the Gypsy dialects. The UBS says it is willing to continue the work so that more and more representatives of the Gypsy nations can hear the word about God’s love and can have the Bible in their native tongue, like other nations.
