Uzhhorod – After 57 years the residence of the bishop of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo in southwestern Ukrainian Transcarpathia has been returned. Nevertheless, this return may be considered very relative as, out of 2000 square meters, the church was returned only 200, that is, 10 percent. The rest remains the property of a university. uzhgorod.net.ua posted the news on 19 June 2006.
From now on, the bishop’s reception area will include five small rooms. According to uzhgorod.com.ua, this is just the start of the process, as the university’s pro-rector and library director and local authorities said that the residence should be returned to the Greek Catholics. The largest library in the region needs a new building which would correspond to modern requirements. It looks like this is going to be a key issue for the cultural life of the region, which will definitely require the help of the government.
In the meantime, the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo is looking for money to repair the residence, which is in bad condition.
