Ukrainians in Italy Establish Christian Society, Discuss Immigrant ProblemsRome -- During a meeting on 9 November 2003 in Italy’s capital, Rome, representatives of 24 Ukrainian communities from all over the country established the Christian Society of Ukrainians in Italy. In addition, they discussed church-state cooperation, targeted at solving the most urgent problems of Ukrainian immigrants.

Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, apostolic visitator for Greek Catholics in Italy, and Viktor Hamotskyi, consul of Ukraine to Italy, greeted the participants of the meeting.

Fr. Vasyl Potochniak, pastoral coordinator of Ukrainians in Italy, acquainted the participants with the society’s objectives and main directions of work. It will be aimed at uniting Ukrainian communities in Italy and providing optimal conditions of life for them in this country. The society will cover spiritual, legal, social, educational, informational and artistic fields.

The society’s council will include representatives from various Italian cities. Anna Umlieva of western Ukrainian Lviv was elected head of the Christian Society of Ukrainians in Italy.
