Kyiv—Head of the Department of the External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), Archimandrite Kyryl, on the instruction of UOC-MP Head, Metropolitan Volodymyr, sent greetings to Archbishop Mechyslav Mokshytskyi of the Roman Catholic Church on occasion of his election to the position of the new head of RCC in Ukraine.

The participants discussed questions regarding preparation for the beginning of the construction of the Cathedral of Christ’s Resurrection and a spiritual and educational complex in Kyiv. Kyiv—Ukraine’s President greeted the new metropolitan of the Lviv Metropolitanate of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, Archbishop Mechyslav Mokshytskyi. In his address, published by the presidential press service on 24 October, Victor Yushchenko expressed confidence that the archbishop “will continue the noble work of his renowned predecessors in a fitting way.”

Ministry of Health and All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations to Cooperate in the Area of Medical Care

Kyiv—Inter-confessional council Solidarity of Churches and Religious Organizations of Ukraine in the Area of Medical Care was held in Kyiv on 3 November. The organization of the council was initiated and supported by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the context of holding the social week. According to the UGCC Information Department, the council became another step in establishing cooperation between Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, Ukrainian churches and religious organizations in the area of medical care.

Zhytomyr—Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine gathered on 3-5 October in one of the centers of Caritas-Spes Ukraine in the village of Zarichany of Zhytomyr Region. At the meeting, Archbishop Mechyslav Mokshytskyi was elected the new Head of the Conference of Bishops. Bishop-Ordinary Leon Dubravskyi was elected Vice Head and Bishop-Coadjutor of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia Diocese. Marian Buchek was elected secretary.

Kyiv—The State Accreditation Committee annulled licenses of several higher education institutions for gross violations of the law on education and license terms of rendering the educational services. UNIAN news agency was informed by representatives of the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

International Missionary Forum Held in Ukraine

Kyiv—In the town of Irpin, Kyiv Region, an international missionary forum took place, entitled “Mission today: history, analytics, new approaches. Prospects of international partnership in CIS countries.” The forum was attended by over 250 participants, representing approximately, one hundred different ministries from 20 countries (Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Kirgizstan, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Great Britain, USA, Australia, etc.). Kyiv—On 30 October, Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine issued a resolution (N 953) “On Approval of the Regulation of the Committee for Ensuring the Realization of Rights of Religious Organizations and its Composition.” According to the document, the Committee is a “standing consultative and advisory body attached to the Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine.” One of the main objectives of the committee is “preparation of proposals as to the restoration of rights of religious organizations, violated as a result of the totalitarian policy of the Soviet Union and development of a mechanism to overcome negative consequences of that policy.”

Kyiv- 19-23 October, an official delegation of the State Committee of Ukraine on Matters of Nationalities and Religions headed by Oleksandr Sagan made a working visit to the Chinese People’s Republic on the invitation of the state administration on matters of religions of the State Council of China. On 20 October, Oleksandr Sagan met with the deputy head of the state administration on matters of religions, Mr. Van. The parties exchanged information on the religious situation in Ukraine and China and discussed urgent problems of development of state-confessional relations in both countries.

Lviv—On 1 November, a memorial service was conducted at the Memorial for the Warriors of the Ukrainian Galician Army and the Ukrainian Sichovi Striltsi in Yaniv Cemetery in Lviv with the participation of Ukraine’s President, Victor Yushchenko. The event was held within the framework of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Western-Ukrainian People’s Republic. RISU was told by Taras Hrynchyshyn that the service was headed by Bishop Andrii (Horak), Metropolitan of Lviv and Sokal of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate and Bishop Mykhail (Koltun) of Sokal and Zhovkva of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, who is in charge of chaplaincy ministry for the military. They were assisted in the service by the clergy of the two mentioned confessions and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

Odessa— 25 October-1 November, the first blessed council of the Russian True-Orthodox Church (RTOC) was held in the Cathedral of Prelate Ioan Kronshtadtskyi in the city of Odessa. The main subjects of the council were the beatification of new saints, Moscow Patriarchate’s relations with other jurisdictions of “true Orthodoxy,” their position on globalization and identification codes as well as relations with other parts of the historic Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA), of which RTOC considers itself a successor.

Is there a shortage of research workers, doctors, teachers?" – asked Patriarch Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych, in his appeal to the participants of the round table which took place on November 1, 2008 in Kyiv. “We lack a Christian elite: people who have not only high professional skills, not only a broad world view, but also persons who have high Christian awareness.”

On October 31 on Metropolitan Andrey Street 2 in Lviv, a memorial tablet in honor of Metropolitan Andrey (Sheptytskyi) was unveiled. Reverend Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna), Curial Bishop, blessed the tablet. The initiator of establishing the memorial tablet was the Lviv regional society of political prisoners and repressions. According to the head of the society, Petro Franko, Andrey Sheptytskyi is the most majestic figure in Ukrainian history: "His way of life deserves to be followed. We all have to remember him and take his example. He was a comprehensively developed, unusually good man. If it were not for him, there would be no National Museum and many other valuable memorials in Lviv."

Odessa—On 30 October, a scholarly-practical conference “Ukraine and the Vatican in the Development of Higher Education” was held in The Christian Humanitarian and Economic University in Odessa.
In particular, a report by Yurii Reshetnikov a candidate of Philosophic Sciences, dealt with the question of interaction of the Church with the state in the area of education in the context of harmonization of state-church relations. He described the legal basis of the law in place in the questions of religious education and noted that today, the rights of believers to education are very impaired as compared to other categories of citizens. Y. Reshetnikov informed the audience about deputies’ initiatives to remedy the situation. Y. Reshetnikov described the decision of the education minister, I. Vakarchuk to support a number of alterations to the law, as positive and instrumental in changing the situation. The minister announced this at the session of the extended collegium of the Ministry of Education with the participation of representatives from the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations on 26 June of this year.

Lviv—An automobile religious procession around Ukraine with an icon of the Mother of God was launched in Lviv. The unusual procession is organized by the All-Ukrainian Brotherhood of Oleksandr Nevskyi with the blessing of the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Volodymyr.

Kyiv—The faction of Vitalii Klychko’s block in the Kyiv City Council asks deputies to return the track and field riding-school (manege) in Berezniaky district to sportsmen thereby breaking the agreement on the rent of the major part of the complex with the religious community Embassy of God. The statement was voiced on 30 October by the block leader, Vitalii Klychko at the session of the Kyiv City Council.

Simferopol—Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate calls Crimean residents not to celebrate Halloween, a festival celebrated widely in the West on the eve of November 1st, which has recently enjoyed popularity among youth of post-Soviet places, particularly in Ukraine.
For instance, in the Crimea, they actively call young people to celebrate Halloween at various “parties.” Announcements of the events are posted by official sites of a number of Crimean cities. “Bloody competitions, beastly prizes, blood-cooling music…Special present for the most terrible costume!” says, for instance, an offer of one of Yalta’s hotels, posted at the city’s internet portal.

On Friday October 25, 2008, Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna), head of the Department of Church Commissions and Responsible for Monastic Matters of the Patriarchal Curia of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, visited monastic houses of the Incarnate Word in the Ivano-Frankivs’k Eparchy. The visit started with a visit to the house of the sisters in Burshtyn, where presently a community of sisters resides, among whom is Provincial Mother Superior Sister Maria Sliz Farina.

International conference Collegiality, Synodality and Community Held

The theme of collegiality occupies an important place in modern Christian theology. Recently it became a point at the issue of the Mixed International Commission on Dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Considering this from October 23 to 27, theologians of the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches met in one of the best known centers in world Christianity, the monastery of the brothers of Bose (Monastero di Bose, Italy), to discuss the following questions:
• The idea of ecumenism in the documents of the Second Vatican Council;
• The place of collegiality in Eastern theology;
• Collegiality and the development of ecumenical dialogue;
• Collegiality and synodality in the context of different cultures.


Meeting of UGCC Youth Held in Argentina

On Sunday, October 26, the 19th meeting of youth of the Eparchy of the Holy Protection in Argentina took place. Despite strong rain and a tropical storm, 350 persons arrived at the Parish of Saint Volodymyr in Posadas, Misiones. Registration of the participants began in the morning, and after breakfast the youth glorified God with singing. After the greeting with bread and salt and a short performance of the youth organization Youth for Christ from Posadas, Father Pastor Jose Hazuda led a prayer, greeted the participants, and gave a blessing to all, and so the meeting officially opened.
