Transfer of Kyiv Church to Autocephalous Orthodox Opposed

Kyiv— At a press-conference on 27 May 2008, scholars, restorers, museum workers, and public figures expressed their bewilderment at the proposal of the Presidential Secretariat of 21 May to transfer St. Andrew’s Church from St. Sophia’s National Reserve in Kyiv to the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).

Ukraine Buddhists Demand Parliament Reject New Religion Bill

Kyiv— Responding to the bill of a national deputy of the Our Ukraine-National Self-Defense bloc, H. Moskal, “On making alterations to the Law of Ukraine ‘On freedom of worship and religious organizations’ (regarding the prevention of activity of religious cults of a destructive character and totalitarian sects),” the Spiritual Board of Ukraine’s Buddhists (SBUB) stated that Parliament’s passing that bill would lead to considerable complications of the relations between religious organizations and state authorities, cause considerable interreligious tension, and seriously undermine Ukraine’s image as a state governed by the rule of law both among believers and internationally. An open address of the SBUB, signed by the head, Dzhordzhe Dzhambo Choizhe-lamy, was released on 26 May 2008.

100 Year Old Torah Scroll Brought to Donetsk Synagogue

Donetsk— The Jewish community of far eastern Ukrainian Donetsk held a ceremony bringing another Torah scroll into the synagogue. The restored scroll is more than 100 years old. Jewish life in post-Soviet Donetsk began with it. in-brief.aen.ru posted the news on 22 May 2008.

Russian Orthodox Abroad Bishop Ordained for Ukraine

New York, USA— According to the decision of the Temporary Supreme Church Government (TSCG) of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA), on 18 May 2008 at Holy Trinity Church in New York, Fr. Georgiy (Kravchenko) was ordained bishop of Bolhrad and vicar of the Odesa Eparchy of the ROCA. He is to help Bishop Ahafanhel (Pashkovskyi) provide pastoral care for parishes in Ukraine and Moldova.

Kyiv— On 20 May 2008, the Jewish community of Ukraine planted a tree in front of Brodsky’s Central Synagogue in Kyiv in honour of UGCC Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi. Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe-Reuven Asman voiced the Jewish community’s gratitude to Metropolitan Sheptytskyi for the rescue of hundreds of Jews during WWII, declaring him a “righteous man of the world.” The “tree of life” ceremony was attended by representatives of several Christian confessions.
Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi was an accomplished religious leader: he supported unification of the Orthodox Churches; He hid hundreds of Jews in his basement during the holocaust, putting himself and his family in danger to save their lives; he wrote “Thou shall not kill,” an address condemning anti-Semitism and Hitler’s propaganda. Many years later, the Jewish community recognized Sheptytskyi a “righteous man of the world.”

Kyiv—The Press Secretary of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Kyivan Patriarchate, Archimandrite Yevstratii (Zoria) was ordained Bishop of Vasylkivskyi and Vicar of the Kyivan Eparchy of the UOC-KP by UOC-KP head Patriarch Filaret on 25 May 2008, during the celebration of the 900th anniversary of St. Michael’s Golden Domed Monastery.

National Council Heeds Christian Journalist Association’s Demands; Film Broadcasting Restricted

Kyiv—The National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine (NCTRB) supported the Novomedia Association of Christian Journalists’ proposal to prohibit “1+1” and other channels from broadcasting the movie “Brokeback Mountain” at any time except from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Youth of Lviv Pray for Peace in the World

On May 21-23, at Danylo Halytskyi Square in the city of Lviv, the prayer event "Book of Peace," in which took part young people from various Christian denominations, was held. The purpose of the event was to unite youth of various denominations in joint prayer and to witness to Christ and His love in the life of each young person.

Cardinal Bertone Assures that Church Will Permanently Help Ukrainian Citizens in Italy

"Being the Archishop of Genoa, I was in a position to meet directly plenty of your fellow-citizens who are emigrants in Italy. I was staggered seeing their aspiration to remain faithful to their own land and the Byzantine expression of your Christian faith," Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, said on May 25 in a speech to faithful of the UGCC gathered in the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God, which is located on the site of the future Patriarchal Center of the UGCC in Kyiv.
