Roman Catholic Sisters Win Land Issue Court Case

Ternopil – On 21 January 2008, the Economic Court in western Ukraine’s Ternopil cancelled the decision of the Yazlovets Village Council which refused to recognize the property rights of the Congregation of Sisters of Holy Mary’s Immaculate Conception pertaining to some of the monastery’s buildings. The court upheld the Sisters’ property rights, and thus if the Yazlovets Village Council does not appeal the court’s decision, the buildings will then be registered by the Buchach District Bureau of the Technical Inventory, as RISU’s correspondent Volodymyr Moroz in Ternopil reported.

Warsaw-Moscow – In his recent interview with the Polish Catholic Information Agency, Metropolitan Kyryl (Hundiayev) of Smolen and Kaliningrad raised the issue of relations between the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). Despite the fact that the metropolitan pronounced the existence of the UGCC to be an evident and necessary matter, emphasizing that “the UGCC has existed and should exist; we should not touch nor hinder anyone,” the remainder of his commentary resembled more of a reproach.

Chapel Opens at Ukrainian Parliament

Kyiv – The St. Volodymyr Chapel was opened in a building of the Ukrainian Parliament in 3A Sadova Street. The opening ceremony was attended by priests, national deputies and journalists. According to news.liga.net, the opening of the chapel was initiated by National Deputies Volodymyr Malyshev and Ihor Rybakov.

Kyiv – On 19 January 2008, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko took part in a holy public prayer conducted by Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) on Epiphany. Kyiv – For the first time in its history the All-Ukrainian Festival of Arts and Spiritual Culture “Ukrainian Christmas” organized a concert “Christmas on the Railway” on 16 January 2008. The Bells of Podil Choir and the Kyiv Sax Quartet sang and played Christmas carols for Kyiv residents and guests. At first, the entertainment evoked surprise from both passengers and railway employees; however, each new song was received with more and more warmth, as RISU’s correspondent Natalia Nesterova reported.

Orthodox Civic Organizations Deny Role in Anti-Semitic Protests in Odesa

Odesa –A statement by the Novorosia (“New Russia”) Organization, the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Cossack Organization, and the Union of Orthodox Journalists, which the Religious Information Service of Ukraine (RISU) received on 17 January 2008, states that these organizations had nothing to do with the recent writing and spreading anti-Semitic leaflets in southern Ukraine’s Odesa. Leaders of the organizations say that the statement made by Hierarch Oleh Mokriak, head of the Department of Religious Education, Catechization and Missionary Work of the Odesa Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), accusing them of anti-Semitism, is nothing other than “ provocation and libel.”
