Vatican – Within the framework of the Episcopal visit Ad Limina Apostolorum to the Vatican from 28 January to 2 February 2008, Pope Benedict XVI received Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) with his assistant bishops: Hierarch Dionisiy (Liakhovych), Hierarch Vasyl (Medvit) and Hierarch Hlib (Lonchyna), the curial bishops of the head of the UGCC. Hiararch Bohdan (Dziurakh), the Administrator of the Kyiv Archeparchy, also took part in the meeting. According to Patriarch Lubomyr, the key objective of the meeting was to hear the Pontiff’s advice and directives and receive an assessment of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s present condition and prospects.

Kyiv – In response to questions during a web conference conducted on orthodoxy.org.ua, Bishop Antonii (Pakanych) of Boryspil, head of the Synod Theological Canonical Committee of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and rector of the Kyiv Theological Academy, expressed his views on the canonical autocephaly of the UOC. Kyiv – On 25 January 2008, Bishop Oleksandr (Drabynko) of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi, Secretary of the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and Vicar of the Kyiv Metropolitate, commented on a statement of the People’s Movement which expressed concern over the opening and blessing by Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan) of Kyiv and All Rus’-Ukraine, head of the UOC-MP.of a chapel in Parliamentary buildings.

Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), died 27 January 2008 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. He was 97. According to kutv.com, he was the first Mormon church president to visit Ukraine, in September 2002.

Simferopol – The Crimean Prosecutor’s Office protested the decision of the Simferopol City Council (SCC) of 10 January 2007 regarding the allotment of land for the construction of a mosque. Kyiv – During the Week of Prayer, Orthodox and Catholics of both Eastern and Latin traditions prayed together in the churches of different denominations. The week’s final meeting took place in the Church of Evangelical Christians on 25 January 2008. The Prayer Week has had a 40-year tradition, whereas in Ukraine it was conducted for the second time only, on the initiative of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC).

Kyiv – In an explanatory note to a bill on the assurance that words spoken in holy confession will be held in complete confidence, Ukrainian National Deputy Marushchenko, author of the bill “On the introduction of changes to Ukraine’s Criminal Code concerning the divulging of secrets at confession,” aims to secure the rights of citizens, ensuring that priests do not divulge confidential information. In particular, the bill initiates changes to Article 69 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, banning the priests from giving witness to the information they receiv during confession. Greek Catholic Bishops Update Pope on Situation in UGCC 29.01.2008, [16:58] // UGCC //
Vatican – On 28 January 2008 bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) started their individual meetings with Pope Benedict XVI as part of their visit to the Vatican, commonly termed “Ad limina Apostolorum” (ecclesiastic term for pilgrimage to the sepulchres of St. Peter and St. Paul, i.e. the Vatican). As part of their visit, they co-celebrated liturgies in the Roman basilicas and held meetings in the Vatican departments. Similar meetings will be held with Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, the prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches. The visit is due to finish on 2 February 2008.
St. George’s Monastery Asks to Return Its Buildings 28.01.2008, [17:00] // Church-state relations //
Rivne – During his official visit to northwestern Ukraine’s Rivne on 24 January 2008, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister Ivan Vasiunyk visited St. George’s Monastery by the Cossack Graves in the village of Pliashevo, where he discussed the continuing problem of this historical place together with Rivne Governor Viktor Matchuk, Leonid Halabuz, director of the Preserve, Hieromonk Nykon (Haidai) and others. The issue which dominated the discussion, according to the press service of St. George’s Monastery by the Cossack Graves, was the construction of a new exposition center in the Berestechko Battle National Preserve, on the territory where the monastery is located.

Poltava – A synagogue will be constructed in downtown Poltava, as Poltava Main Rabbi Joseph Itskhak Sehal informed journalists on 25 January 2008.
