Kyiv-Athens— On 7 February 2008, at the Annunciation Cathedral of Athens, the head of the Elladian Orthodox Church was elected. Metropolitain Ieronymos of Thebes and Levadia received 43 of the 75 votes and was appointed Archbishop of Athens and All Greece. According to a report posted by UOC-MP official site, Metropolitain Volodymyr (Sabodan) of Kyiv and All Ukraine greeted the hierarch on the occasion of his new appointment on behalf of the Synod and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Lviv— The Head of the Busk District State Administration, Mykhailo Vovk, during a session of the Presidium of the Lviv State Administration on 8 February 2008, informed his audience that yet another wooden church may soon be meeting an unknown fate: ”The village of Pobuzhany of Busk District of Lviv Region intends to sell a wooden church of the 17th century with a belfry of the 16th century. The church contains an ancient iconostasis of the 17th century and a copy of the gospels of the 12th century. To the best of my knowledge, the mayor of Cherkasy wishes to purchase the church. Kyiv — The President of the Pontifical Council on Justice and Peace met with UOC-MP Orthodox Head Metropolitain Volodymyr (Sabodan) on 6 February within the framework of his visit to Ukraine (3-6 February). According to a report posted by the official site of the UOC-MP, during a meeting at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, Cardinal Martino told Metropolitain Volodymyr of the work on the Compendium of Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church. The cardinal noted that, “We believe that this Compendium can create space for dialogue not only for Christians of all confessions, but also for all people of good will who share our teachings about the value and dignity of the human person, as man was created after the image of God.”

Kyiv—On 6 February 2008, the President of Ukraine met with the leadership of the Crimean Autonomous Republic. During the meeting Victor Yushchenko stressed the necessity to meet religious needs of the Crimean Tatars. The head of state noted that he does not “see any legitimate grounds not to allow construction of religious buildings for the Crimean Tatars.” RISU posted the story on 8 February 2008.

Êyiv — “I have placed a deputy’s inquiry with the Security Service of Ukraine and Ministry of Internal Affairs as to the activity of Sunday Adelaja [Minister of the Embassy of God Church in Kyiv], as I think his church represents not a religion, but a sect. And this sect is hostile to our conscience, culture, mentality, traditions,” stated Kyrylo Kulykov, deputy of Our Ukraine-National Self-Defense party in an interview with “Hlavred.” UNIAN reported the story on 7 February 2008.

Ternopil —Foreign Protestant students of Ternopil National Economics University (ÒNEU) have organized a new Christian group, Embassy of Christ, in Ternopil. The organization was formed on the initiative of several students who are members of a similar organization abroad. According to its members, it is the only Christian community for foreign students.
