Kyiv— Results of the “Person of the Year in the Ukrainian Christian Community” award were announced on 28 February 2008 in Kyiv. The honorary title “Person of the Year in Christianity – 2007” was given to the Ukrainian president’s wife, Kateryna Yushchenko. The competition was held on the initiative of the Association of Christian Writers of Ukraine. The Association’s Head Kostiantyn Shapovalov noted that the competition was held for the first time, but expressed hope that it becomes traditional and annual.

Kyiv— Ukraine’s Security Service officially warned one of the leaders of Sub-Carpathian Rusyns, Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate priest Dmytro Sydor, as to possible actions committed which qualify according to Ukraine’s Criminal Code as encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine. This information was made public on 28 February 2008, at a press conference by Security Services’ spokeswoman Maryna Ostapenko, reports proUA agency.
Dmytro Sydor campaigns for the autonomy of Pidkarpatska Rus (Trans-Carpathian Region) within Ukraine’s borders. Recently, he made another statement as to “the right of Pidkarpatska Rus to self-determination.”

Kyiv — Minister of Ukraine’s Education and Science Ivan Vakarchuk believes that the issue of introduction of Christian Ethics in general education schools should be further discussed. The minister stressed in his interview to the newspaper Den’ that “one cannot avoid in children’s education what humanity has achieved over thousands of years. However, it is not only the authorities’ but also the community’s role to express what exactly we understand by the notion of Christian Ethics. Lviv— At a session of the Lviv City Council on 28 February 2008, the deputies passed a decision “On approval of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyivan Patriarchate community’s project of allocation of a land plot for construction of St. Volodymyr’s Church of UOC –KP at 89 Chervonoiy Kalyny Prospect in Lviv.” According to the decision, the land plot is being rented to the community for 10 years. In response, members of the UOC-MP Orthodox community picketed the Lviv City Council.

SIMFEROPOL— Crimean Muslims have gathered over 49 thousand building stones for the construction of the Soborna Mosque in Simferopol during the two weeks of the initiative “A Building Block from Each Muslim.” According to a report from the UNIAN news agency, “every day, people personally bring building stones to the future mosque construction site on behalf of their family members and near relations.” RISU’s Ukrainian-language web page posted this story on 27 February 2008.

Kyiv — Head of the European Representative Office of the International Catholic Committee for Penitentiary Pastoral Care, Deacon Peter Ekhtermaier, visited Kyiv on invitation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) Patriarchate Department. In September 2007, the UGCC assumed the status of an active member of that organization. Ekhtermaier studied the possibilities presented by the work of the Department of Pastoral Care and the many years of activity of Caritas Ukraine in this area in order to develop UGCC cooperation with international Catholic structures on development of prison chaplaincy. One Hundred Thousand USD Spent on Old Believers’ Museum Complex near Chernivtsi 28.02.2008, [15:43] // Church-state relations //
Chernivtsi— Since the beginning of construction of the Old Believers’ Museum Complex in southwestern Bila Krynytsia, 471,000 hryvnia (100,000 USD) have been awarded from the Local Self-Government Promotion Fund (Kyiv) and the local budget. However, the amount is not sufficient for the full commissioning of the complex. The complex is to include an exhibition hall, library, several hotel rooms and an Old Believers’ dining room. To enable the continuation of the works, 30 thousand hryvnia (6,000 USD) have been allocated from the local Hlybotskyi District budget and are to be spent as soon as possible. Kyiv— Head of the State Committee of Ukraine on Matters of Nationalities and Religions, Oleksandr Sahan, and a Chabad Lubavitch Hasid, Azriel Chaikin, had a meeting at the State Committee of Ukraine on Matters of Nationalities and Religions. According to a report of the Jewish News Agency of 26 February 2008, Rabbi Azriel Chaikin congratulated Oleksandr Sahan on his appointment and expressed confidence that his work will be aimed at supporting inter-nationality and inter-confessional peace in Ukraine.
