Kyiv— On 15 April 2008, The Interfax agency held a press conference entitled “Raiders Attack and Rob the All-Ukrainian Society of Political Prisoners and Repressed Persons (SPPRP)” to discuss an organized break-in that happened three weeks ago. On 24 March, 15 people broke onto the society’s premises without authorization and demanded the building be cleared immediately. The perpetrators removed also removed the society’s name-plate from the outside wall and replaced it with a plate which read “Museum of the Orthodox Icon”.

On Saturday April 12, 2008, in the Church of Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God of Luts’k, which has now become a cathedral, during a pontifical Divine Liturgy the enthronement (introduction on the see) of the Rev. Bishop Josaphat (Hovera), Exarch of Luts’k, was held. The episcopal ordination of Bishop Josaphat was carried out on April 7, 2008, in Ternopil’.
Greek Catholic Mystic from Syria Visits Ukraine 15.04.2008, [17:21] // UGCC //
Lviv — Myrna Nazzur – a Christian mystic of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Damask (Syria) – participated in a conference entitled “The Path of Contemplation”, held by the Institute of Ecumenical Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) on 6-11 April 2008 at Univ Monastery. Nazzur and her mentor priest also visited UCU to attend a liturgy and address the university community.

Moscow-Kyiv—At a meeting with Moscow Patriarch Alexis II, Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced support for bringing Russia and Ukraine closer together in terms of church and religion. During the meeting, Alexis II informed Putin of his intention to visit Ukraine for the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus as the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Ukraine Prime Minister Ready to Work with Council of Churches 14.04.2008, [18:09] // Church-state relations //
On 11 April 2008, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko met with members of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUC CRO). She stated that the government will deal with problems of the functioning of churches and religious organizations, first of all, allocation of land for buildings, restitution of property, reduction of gas rates, and the social needs of ministers.

Kyiv— In an article posted on the site of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves on 11 April 2008, Archbishop Pavlo (Lebid) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) stated that he “has not yet agreed” to be a deputy of the Kyiv City Council. The monastery’s superior added that “Even if I do become one, it will be done to fulfill the will of higher church authorities and it does not bother me at all.” A RISU story of 10 April noted that Archbishop Pavlo appeared on the Communist Party’s list of election candidates for the Kyiv City Council.

Kyiv—The leader of the Christian-Democratic Union Party, Volodymyr Stretovych, has called Ukrainians to conduct a few days of “prayers for repentance for our personal sins and the sins of our nation” before Easter. This year Easter will be celebrated on 27 April according to the Julian calendar used by Orthodox and Greek Catholics in Ukraine. Crimean Muslim Mufti Accuses Authorities of “Selective” Approach to Believers’ Rights 11.04.2008, [16:34] // Muslims //
Simferopol— Mufti Adzhi Emirali Ablaiev, head of the Spiritual Direction of Crimean Muslims, refused to participate in a joint action planting trees in the Alley of Friendship of Nations in the city of Simferopol, in southern Ukrainian Crimea. He explained this by the fact that the position of Crimea’s leaders on the rights and needs of believers “is of a selective character varying from religion to religion.” So reported obkom.net.ua on 10 April 2008.
Vandals Deface Numerous Crimean Tatar Sites 11.04.2008, [16:25] // Conflict //
Crimea— Unidentified persons vandalized a mosque and left graffiti insulting the Crimean Tatars in several neighborhoods of the town of Bilohorsk in southern Ukrainian Crimea. A Muslim cemetery was also vandalized in the village of Chystenke near Simferopol. obkom.net.ua posted the news on 11 April 2008.

Kyiv— As part of an official visit to Libya on 7-8 April 2008, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko visited the Church of St. Andrew the First-called Apostle of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate within the Diplomatic Mission of Ukraine in Libya. The president met with the Ukrainian community in Libya.
