Roman Catholic Bishop Calls Dnipropetrovsk Authorities to Defend Religious Rights

Dnipropetrovsk – Roman Catholic Bishop Stanislaw Padewski of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia has sent an address to the governor, heads of the regional administration and council in southeastern Ukraine’s Dniproptrovsk Region, also the president, the human rights representative of Parliament, and the apostolic nuncio to Ukraine regarding the violation of rights of Roman Catholic faithful to freedom of religion and freedom from discrimination for religious convictions. Kyiv – Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has submitted a bill “On introduction of changes to the Criminal and Criminal-Process Codes of Ukraine,” for the review of the Ukrainian Parliament, determined as urgent and extraordinary. The draft law will demand criminal responsibility for the denial of the Holodomor [man-made famine in Ukraine of 1932-1933] as genocide against the Ukrainian people and the Holocaust as genocide against the Jewish people and provide for the proper honoring of Holodomor and Holocaust victims. president.gov.ua posted the news on 28 March 2007.

Kyiv – On 28 March 2007 in the Chancellery of the All-Ukraine Union of the Association of Evangelical Baptists, the Central Department of the Ukrainian Bible Society (UBS) discussed activities and future plans, in particular the publication of various translations of the Bible. So reported Vasyl Korshak, a member of the board from the Ukrainian Lutheran Church.

Lviv – The parishioners of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) of St. Mary Magdalene in western Ukrainian Lviv have ended a nine-day hunger-strike and left the building of the Lviv House of Organ and Chamber Music, which also houses their parish, at the personal request of Cardinal Marian Jaworski, primate of the RCC in Ukraine. However, the protesters said they have not given up their demands and want the conflict over the building to be resolved. 5tv.com.ua posted the news on 28 March 2007.

Kyiv – Bishop Andrii Tyshchenko of the New Generation Church in Ukraine published an open letter to Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), on 28 March 2007, criticizing a recent statement of the UOC-KP and calling upon the patriarch “to apologize for such offensive words.” Patriarch Filaret wrote that New Generation has “the classical features of a totalitarian sect or cult.”

Kyiv – On 27 March 2007, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), received a German delegation from the Friederich Ebert Foundation, which presented a support program for Ukraine to the patriarch. Moscow – Old Orthodox Bishop Apollinarii (Dubinin) of Kursk, Russia, made a pastoral visit to Ukraine on 15-17 March 2007. The bishop heard confessions and gave Communion to Old Orthodox Christians at the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonder-Worker in southern Ukrainian Kremenchuk, as well as in the Zaporizhzia, Kirovohrad, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Kyiv – More than 200 Orthodox delegates from 22 regions of Ukraine gathered in Kyiv on 24 March 2007 in order to protect their church and support the union of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). The All-Ukrainian Congress of the Orthodox Community of Ukraine was held with the blessing of Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the UOC-MP, and organized by the All-Ukrainian Brotherhood of Alexander Nevsky (AUBAN).
