Odesa – Valerii Kaurov, head of the Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine, was held by Odesa police on 17 July 2007 after finishing a religious procession dedicated to the memory of Russian Tsar Nicholas II which later turned into an anti-NATO demonstration. Kaurov was charged with violating article 185-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on the conduct of organizing mass actions. The District Maritime Court of Odesa found him guilty and fined him 170 hryvnias (approximately US $ 34).

Dnipropetrovsk – Bishop Stanislaw Padewski of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kharkiv-Zaporizhzhia informed parishioners in eastern Ukrainian Dnipropetrovsk that he had sent a letter to former Primer Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Lazarenko requesting him to help return the city’s Church of St. Joseph to the Catholics. Uzhhorod - The Rusyns of southwestern Ukraine’s Transcarpathia Region oppose plans to set up an American NMD (national missile defense) in the plains of Rivne and Stoi. Kyiv — Information from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU, in its Ukrainian acronym) indicates that the presence in Ukraine of new religious groups, including some that are considered by national and foreign experts in religious studies to have signs of totalitarian and destructive cults, is increasing. Kyiv — According to Vasyl Prysiazhniuk, head of Kyiv’s Main Department of City Planning, Architecture and Design of City Environment, the department did not issue a permit for use of a lot near the foundations of the historical Tithe Church and did not consider corresponding design documentation. Ternopil — Nearly 100,000 faithful from throughout Ukraine and from Russia, Poland, Kazakhstan, Canada, and the U.S. made a pilgrimage to western Ukrainian Zarvanytsia, Ternopil Region. The event culminated in a Liturgy on 15 July 2007 with the participation of Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic, apostolic nuncio to Ukraine, and various Catholic bishops, priests, and faithful. Ivan Stoiko, head of the regional administration, read a letter of greeting from Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.
