Rare Archeological Discovery in Baturyn

Chernihiv – In northern Ukraine’s Baturyn, the former Cossack capital, archeologists have discovered the famous Holy Trinity Church, for which construction Hetman Ivan Mazepa donated 20, 000 gold coins. According to Volodymyr Kovalenko, director of the Institute of Archeology and Ancient History of Northern Livoberezhzhia, who headed the international expedition, only two apexes, one column and a fragment of the main wall’s foundation permit stating with certainty that the discovered ruins belong to the ancient Holy Trinity Church. Lviv – On 29 August 2007, the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) hosted Family Forum 2007, organized by the UGCC Lviv Eparchy Committee on Family Issues, the Christian Family Movement Council, and the Family Foundation. Kyiv – The civic union, Orthodox Choice, has released an Address to Orthodox Voters of Ukraine, which states that, “the attempt of the Orange revolutionaries, led by current President Viktor Yushchenko and Yulia Tymoshenko, to gain revenge for their setback in parliamentary elections in 2006 is the main reason for the political crisis in Ukraine.” Therefore, the authors of the address are calling upon Orthodox citizens not to vote for the Orange politicians. According to them, “conscious support for the anti-Orthodox Orange parties and blocs at the parliamentary elections, which are due to take place on 30 September 2007, is anti-Orthodox and anti-church,” as Yuri Yegorov, head of the Oleksandr Nevskyi Orthodox Brotherhood, informed RISU, which posted the story on 29 August 2007 on its Ukrainian-language site.

Kyiv – For the first time in the history of the CIS, in Kyiv on 21-25 September 2007, Ukraine will host the General Assembly of the Conference of European Justice and Peace Commissions on the theme stated above. Guests from 30 European countries will discuss the influence of the Soviet past on today’s Ukraine, problems of ideological propaganda and concealment of historic truth, and ways to heal the wounds of the past. A separate day will be devoted to visiting the Chernobyl area and honoring the victims of the tragedy. Work groups of the Conference of European Justice and Peace Commissions on joint action will also be conducted on upcoming themes of migration (2007) and poverty (2008).
