Odesa – On 1 September 2006 a group of representatives of the Suvorivskyi District Court in southern Ukrainian Odesa visited the Cathedral of St. George the Conqueror and inventoried church property for several hours. They said that the faithful of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) should leave the building by 6 September so that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) can move in. The fact that all the members of the former community of the UOC-KP and its pastor decided to convert to the UAOC has caused controversy which led to a long-lasting opposition.

Lviv — On 4 September 2006 the second session of the sobor [assembly] of religious of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) opened at Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv. The theme of this session is “Vocation and Formation.” Lasting until 8 September, it is being held as part of the first sobor of religious in the history of the UGCC.

UOC-MP and Russian Orthodox Honor Former Ukraine Election Committee Head

Kyiv – Serhii Kivalov, rector of the Odesa National Juridical Academy and former head of Ukraine’s Central Election Committee, has received awards from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). On 3 September 2006 the Church of St. Tetiana was opened in southern Ukrainian Odesa, and Kivalov had given the money for the construction of the church, which he said was donated by students and lecturers of the academy and residents of Odesa.

Kyiv – Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), has criticized Ukraine’s General Prosecutors’ Office for refusing to start a criminal case against actions which hinder the holding of Liturgies in church buildings of the UOC-KP. He said this at a press conference in eastern Ukrainian Poltava on 3 September 2006.

Kyiv – On 31 August 2006 the High Administrative Court overturned a decision of the Regional Administration in western Ukraine’s Ternopil Region (TRA) and returned Holy Trinity Church in the village of Rokhmaniv, Shumskyi District, to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The TRA had decreed that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) could alternate holding Liturgies in the building with the UOC-MP.

Historical Building in Ivano-Frankivsk Given to Greek Catholic Church

Ivano-Frankivsk – At the decree of Roman Tkach, head of the Regional Administration in western Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk (IRA), real estate of the Pidlute health resort, situated in the village of Osmoloda, Rozhniativsky District, was given to the Ivano-Frankivsk Eparchial Administration of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). Cedar Chambers, the summer residence of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, head of the UGCC from 1901 to 1944, was located at the foot of the Luta Mountain near Osmoloda. if.gov.ua posted the news on 31 August 2006.
