Crimea – Anatolii Hrytsenko, speaker of the Parliament of southern Ukrainian Crimea, promises to find a tolerant solution to the issue of the construction of an Orthodox church building in the village of Holybynka, Bakhchysarai District, which is opposed by part of the local Muslim population. Hrytsenko said this at a meeting with Emirali Ablaiev, mufti of the Spiritual Direction of Muslims of Crimea, held before the Muslim holy day Oraza-Bairam. unian.net posted the news on 23 October 2006.

Chernivtsi — As part of the planned renovation of the Central Square of southwestern Ukrainian Chernivtsi in honor of the city’s upcoming 600th birthday, more than 3,500 signatures have been collected to restore a cross with pieta (statue of mourning Mary) to the square. Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishops Promote Sobriety

Kyiv — A project to encourage a sober way of life was among the issues discussed at the 32nd Session of the Synod of Bishops of the Kyiv-Halych Metropolitanate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). Thirteen UGCC bishops who serve in Ukraine took part at the meeting held from 20-21 October 2006 in Zarvanytsia, in western Ukraine’s Ternopil Region. Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the UGCC, presided.
Christian Ethics not Taught in Most Sumy Schools

Zhytomyr — The Nativity Church of the Evangelical Baptists is located on Kotsiubynskoho Street in central Ukrainian Zhytomyr in the city’s former Lutheran church. The small Lutheran community was unable to maintain the building, which it sold to the Baptists, though it continues holding services there. Kyiv – On 23 October 2006, the mosque of the Islamic Cultural Center in Kyiv held a very ceremonial sermon and prayer service of local Muslims and foreign diplomats, dedicated to Oraza-Bairam, which marks the end of Ramadan. Similar meetings were held in other cities and towns of Ukraine which have Muslim communities.
