UOC-KP Orthodox Head in Kyiv Complains to Prosecutor 06.07.2006, [17:31] // UOC-KP //
Kyiv – On 5 July 2006, in view of recent events, especially regarding St. Catherine’s Church in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), submitted a complaint to Public Prosecutor General of Ukraine Oleksandr Medvedko. Named in the complaint were the actions of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, the Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine, the Breakthrough (Proryv) civic organization, and local eparchies of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate in the Crimea, Donetsk, Rivne, Odesa, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.

Chernihiv – The struggle for St. Catherine’s Church in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv between representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) sharpens. Chernihiv – “Adherents of [Natalia] Vitrenko [leader of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine (PSPU)] led by [her assistant Volodymyr] Marchenko stir up religious confrontation and attack journalists.” So reads a headline from the “High Rampart” newspaper about the conflict around St. Catherine’s Church in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv. As RISU already reported, there is a confrontation there between supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP). Zhytomyr – The 9th Youth Congress of the Church of Christians of the Evangelical Faith-Pentecostals opened near Malyn, in central Ukraine’s Zhytomyr Region, on 3 July 2006 with the motto “Keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Nearly 3000 young men and women from all the regions of Ukraine, the U.S., Korea, and Germany gathered for a few days to interact, listen to sermons, and sing.

Chernivtsi – The Civic Council of southwestern Ukrainian Chernivtsi, which processes proposals regarding the preparation of the city for the 600th anniversary of its first written mention, has received a proposal to liquidate the Central Market. Lviv – A heap of human skeletons was found in the former Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity in the village of Olesko, Busk District, in western Ukraine’s Lviv Region. The mass grave occupied nearly the whole basement of a former crypt of the church. zik.com.ua posted the news on 3 July 2006.

Kyiv – On 1 July 2006 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Holy Mother of God in western Ukrainian Ternopil, a short ceremony for the appointment of the new administrator of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s (UGCC) Ternopil-Zboriv Eparchy was held. According to the decree of Patriarch Lubomyr, head of the UGCC, Bishop Vasyl Semeniuk, who had been the auxiliary bishop of Ternopil-Zboriv, was appointed administrator.

Kyiv – On 30 June 2006 the Regional Congress of Jehovah’s Witnesses was held in Kyiv’s Olimpiskyi Stadium. Participating were representatives from the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Sumy, Zhytomyr, and Vinnytsia regions. The congress in Kyiv was one of 24 held in the regions of Ukraine and united by one theme, “Liberation is near!”
UOC-MP Orthodox Leader of Odesa Opposes Ukraine Entry into NATO, EU 05.07.2006, [16:28] // UOC-MP //
Kyiv - Metropolitan Ahafanhel (Savvin)of Odesa and Izmail of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) has expressed his protest against Ukraine's joining NATO and the EU and has also demanded that the Russian language be given the status of a state language. Interfax-Ukraine reported on 4 July 2006 that he said this in Moscow at a round-table meeting.
