Ukrainian Orthodox in Canada No Longer to Give Communion to Non-Orthodox

Ottawa — Archbishop John (Stinka), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC), has released an encyclical against the practice of “communion with non-Orthodox,” which certain priests and parishes of his church have allowed. He said that, inasmuch as the teaching of the Orthodox church does not allow this, it will no longer be allowed in the UOCC. interfax-religion.ru posted the news on 31 July 2006.

Kyiv — Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), presided at the episcopal ordination of Archimandrite (Abbot) Meletii (Yehorenko) as bishop of Khotynskyi and vicar of the UOC-MP eparchy in southwestern Ukrainian Chernivtsi. Kyiv — If Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko proposes the candidacy of Viktor Yanukovych for prime minister, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) will go to the opposition. A coalition led by Yanukovych, which would include the Communists, who destroyed churches in Soviet times, would be “immoral.” So said National Deputy Anton Ruzhytskyi, head of the Lviv Region branch of the CDS and member of the Our Ukraine fraction, on 31 July 2006.

Kyiv — At the initiative and with the participation of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, parliamentary leaders and civic activists on 27 and 28 July 2006 sat down to discuss ways out of the country’s current political crisis. The third hottest topic discussed, after NATO and the language question, was religion. Though freedom of religious expression was stressed, support for the creation of a single national Ukrainian Orthodox church was also part of the discussion led by Yushchenko.

Serhii Anitsoi, pastor of Holy Spirit Cathedral in southern Ukrainian Kherson, has asked the civil authorities to provide the funds to repair the 170-year-old church, which has been damaged by water. Fr.
