Georgian Patriarchate Won’t Comment on UOC-MP Orthodox Statements

Kyiv – Archpriest David Sharashenidze, head of the press service of the Georgian Patriarchate, refused to comment on a statement distributed in the name of the Chancellery of the Georgian Patriarchate by the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The statement in question regards the canonical status of clergy associated with a new parish for Georgian Orthodox faithful which opened in Kyiv on 22 January. Lviv – On 29 January 2006, during the Sunday Mass at the Roman Catholic Cathedral in western Ukrainian Lviv, Cardinal Marian Jaworski, head of the Conference of Roman Catholic Bishops of Ukraine, called upon the faithful to pray for the victims of a tragedy in the Polish town of Katowice, where, as a result of the collapse of an exhibition complex, over 60 people died, and for the health of those injured.

Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine to Support Communists

Kyiv – The Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine (UOBU) is planning to support the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) in the March 2006 parliamentary elections. So said Valentyn Lukianyk, head of the UOBU, on 27 January 2006.

Kyiv – The Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine (UOBU) has addressed representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church with the request to make the Ukrainian copy of the Shroud of Turin a gift for the Orthodox. Only in this case, reads the UOBU’s address, will the Orthodox of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate allow the relic inside St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv. sedmica.orthodoxy.ru posted the news on 26 January 2006.

Ecumenical Meetings Held in Transcarpathia

Mukachevo– Ecumenical meetings as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, observed by the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) from 17-25 January 2006, took place in southwestern Ukraine’s Transcarpathian region. As in previous years, present at the joint prayers were Bishop Antal Majnek of the Mukachevo Diocese of the RCC, Bishop Milan Sasik, apostolic administrator of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo, and Bishop-Emeritus Layosh Hulachi of the Reformed Church. But this time, representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) did not participate in the meeting.

Relics from Jerusalem Returned to Simferopol Monastery

Simferopol-- A relic reputed to be a piece of the true cross of Jesus Christ, and other relics which were taken from southern Ukrainian Crimea in 1943, were returned to Ukraine on 24 January 2006.

Lviv – On 17-25 January 2006, the Roman Catholic Church observed the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity under the Gospel verse “where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them." Christians all over Ukraine participated in various ways. Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), however, has admitted this has not become a tradition for the UGCC throughout Ukraine. zik.com.ua posted the news on 27 January 2006.

Adventists Oppose Sunday Decision of Volyn Council of Churches

Kyiv – Volodymyr Krupskyi, head of the Ukrainian Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (UUC-SDA), made a statement concerning the decision of the Council of Churches in northwestern Ukrainian Volyn proposing that Sunday be celebrated as an official holiday on the national level. The Adventists, who celebrate Saturday as their holy day, say that this decision cannot be considered to be the decision of the council, as they, being members of the council, were against it. Moreover, Krupskyi believes that this decision violates the principle of a secular government. RISU received Krupskyi’s statement on 27 January 2006.

Lutsk – Bishop Stepan Veremchuk, head of the Volyn Union of Churches of Christians of the Evangelical Faith-Pentecostals (VUCCEF-P), said that land issues are the most problematic for the normal existence of Pentecostal communities in northwestern Ukraine’s Volyn region. Roman Catholics in Odesa Announce Hunger-Strike

Odesa – Activists of Roman Catholic parishes in southern Ukrainian Odesa said they will go on a one-day hunger-strike at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption on 28 January to protest that the Odesa Regional Administration (ORA) is ignoring their needs. Ukraine Church Council Opposes Religious Campaigning in Election

Kyiv – Churches and religious organizations in Ukraine will do everything to avoid the use of their authority in campaigning for Ukraine’s March 2006 parliamentary elections. Members of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) discussed this and other issues at their regular session held in Kyiv on 26 January 2006.

Odesa Christians Oppose Political Plans of UOC-MP Orthodox Leader

Odesa – The recent news that Metropolitan Ahafanhel (Savvin) of Odesa and Izmail of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) is at the top of the election list of the Party of Regions of Ukraine (PRU) for the Regional Council in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region has met with a negative reaction from representatives of local Christian churches. Ukrainian President Warns against Religious Hostilities before Elections

Kyiv – On 23 January 2006, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed Decree 62/2006 “On provisions for democratic and fair 2006 parliamentary elections.” Among other things, Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security Service, the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, and local administrations are to take measures in order to avoid the heating up of interethnic, racial, religious or any other hostilities during campaigning before the March elections.

Kharkiv – In accord with the decision of the National Sobor (Assembly) of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in 2000, the Kharkiv-Poltava Eparchy of the UAOC recently had a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. As part of the event, on 21-22 January 2006, at the invitation of Bishop Yulian Voronovskyi, Archbishop Ihor (Isichenko) of the UAOC visited the administrative center of the Sambir-Drohobych eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in Truskavets and the UGCC seminary in Drohobych, both in western Ukraine’s Lviv region.

Washington, D.C., USA, 25 January 2006- NCSJ (Advocates on Behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States & Eurasia) applauds the positive steps taken by the Ukrainian government to address anti-Semitism. On 24 January 2006, ministries of the Ukrainian government publicly condemned the anti-Semitic activities of the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management (MAUP), the largest non-state university in Ukraine, and pledged to pursue legal action against it.

Kharkiv – The Regional Administration in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region (KRA) held an extended session of the Department on Religious Matters (DRM) within the KRA. The session, titled “On church-state relations in the Kharkiv region and the work of the DRM in 2005,” was conducted by Yaroslav Yushchenko, deputy head of the KRA. kharkivoda.gov.ua posted the news on 24 January 2006.

Kyiv— Members of the Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine (UOCU) and other Orthodox participated in a procession with the cross, vigil and rally in Kyiv on 22 January 2006 to demand the return of St. Sophia’s Cathedral to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). According to Interfax, several thousands of people participated.

Kyiv– “Bishop Christopher (Samalaidze) [who was present at a Liturgy in a new Orthodox parish for Georgians in Kyiv on 22 January] has in fact nothing to do with the Orthodox Church of Georgia.” Such information was conveyed by Catholicos Ilia II, head of the Orthodox Church of Georgia (GOC), in a phone conversation with Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), on 23 January 2006.
