Greek Catholics are Refused Land in Irpin

Kyiv – Despite the position of Mayor Myroslava Svystovych of Irpin, Kyiv Region, on 22 December 2006 at the session of the Irpin City Council the deputies voted against allotting land for construction to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. As maidan.org.ua reported, most of those who voted against are those deputies who “cry out” for the equality of all churches.

Kyiv – On 21 December 2006 on the premises of St. Olha’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, this year’s last session of the Committee on Issues of Social Ministry of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) was held. Church representatives shared their experience of social ministry and considered problems which require the joint efforts of members of the council. So reported RISU correspondent Vasyl Korshak.

Kyiv – On 21 December 2006, the Erzya people, representatives of one of the biggest Finnish-Hungarian linguistic groups and coming from Mordovia, Russia, gained the possibility to read the Gospel in their own language in a new translation from the Greek. The translation was presented to the Erzya diaspora in Ukraine by Archbishop Varsonofii of Saransk and Mordova at the request of the Kyivan Society of Culture of the Finnish-Permsk Nations. The books were brought to Kyiv by pilgrims of the Holy Transfiguration Stemblivsk Monastery of the Cherkasy Eparchy.

Kyiv – On 21 December 2006, a press conference, “Transferring church buildings to the church: Historical justice,” was held at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. The topic was the restitution of church property taken away after the October Revolution of 1917.

Kyiv – On 15-16 December 2006 in Kyiv the 33rd session of the Synod of Bishops of the Kyiv-Halych Metropolitanate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) was conducted with the participation of 16 hierarchs, members of the Metropolitan Synod. The main topic discussed was pastoral care for immigrants who are UGCC faithful.

Kyiv – Two pickets devoted to the 22 December visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Ukraine took place near the building of the Russian Embassy in Kyiv on 21 December 2006. One group of picketers held Ukrainian banners and posters, the other Russian flags and icons.

Chernihiv – The Regional Appellate Court in northwestern Ukrainian Chernihiv has upheld the appeal of Oleksii Dashevskyi, correspondent of the “High Rampart” newspaper. Dashevskyi reported in August that a local priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) was beaten by faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The UOC-MP denied the incident and requested that the newspaper post a corresponding correction, and the Bakhmatskyi District Court on 31 October supported the UOC-MP. sian-ua.info posted the news on 21 December 2006.

Kyiv – Following the norms of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, the decree of the Board of Rectors of the Commission on Theological Education of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), and the blessing of Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the UGCC, the educational process of the seminaries of the UGCC in Ukraine will be inspected in 2007. ugcc.org.ua posted the news on 21 December 2006.
