Nearly 12,000 Missionaries Entered Ukraine in 2004

Kyiv – According to Ihor Bondarchuk, director of Ukraine’s State Department on Religious Matters, nearly 12,000 missionaries entered the country in 2004. Ostroh – On the morning of 27 October 2005 a clash between the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) broke out in Ostroh, in northwestern Ukraine’s Rivne region. The conflict arose over the Church of the Holy Ascension, over which both parties have claims.

Plan for Location of Kyiv Churches to be Elaborated This Year

Orthodox Brotherhoods Against Proposed Legislation on Personal Identification

Kyiv – In an address issued on 23 October 2005, the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine (UOBU) emphasizes that the draft law “On Recommendations for the Parliamentary Hearings ‘Freedom of Conscience and Personal Identification,’” adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament on 6 October, does not meet the expectations of Orthodox citizens and does not satisfy their constitutional right to freedom of religion and world outlook.

Former Head of Ukraine’s Security Service Preaches Weekly

Kyiv – Oleksandr Turchynov, former head of Ukraine’s Security Service, said in an interview with TV Channel 1+1that every Sunday he preaches at church. He says that the mass media often calls him a pastor. “I do preach at church on Sundays, but I have never been a pastor. Besides, it is very difficult to combine political activity with pastoral service,” said Turchynov. State Reps Attend Meeting of Council of Churches

Kyiv – A regular meeting of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCC RO), presided by the head of the Ukrainian Union Conference of the Church of Seventh-day Adventists, took place at the Church of Seventh-day Adventists on 25 October 2005. In addition to members of the AUCCRO, the meeting was attended by Ihor Bondarchuk, head of Ukraine’s State Department on Religious Matters, Mykola Novychenko, his deputy head, and Oleksandr Sahan, scholarly advisor of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.

Rusyn Orthodox in Ukraine Prepare for Union of Russian Orthodox and Abroad Churches

Odesa – In preparation for a union sobor (assembly) to be held in 2006 that will unite the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Bishop Ahafanhel (Pashkovskyi) of Tavria and Odesa of the related Rusyn Orthodox Church Abroad (Rusyn OCA) headed a meeting in Odesa on 25 October 2005. UOC-MP Orthodox Defend Former Election Committee Head

Odesa – Two thousand citizens of southern Ukrainian Odesa gathered for a demonstration initiated by the Our Ukraine National Union Regional Organization (OUNURO) near the Odesa National Juridical Academy. The participants demanded the removal of Serhii Kivalov, former head of Ukraine’s Central Election Commission (CEC), from the position of rector of the academy and that he be brought to account for “falsifications during the 2004 presidential election.” Among others, faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) came to Kivalov’s defense. Kyiv – Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), has ordained Georgian Deacon Mykola Inasaridze to the priesthood. Fr. Inasaridze will serve at the newly-formed Georgian parish in Kyiv under the jurisdiction of the UOC-KP. The ordination was conducted during a solemn Liturgy dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Patriarch Filaret’s enthronement, held at St Volodymyr’s Church on 23 October 2005.

Kyiv – Celebrating the tenth anniversary of his patriarchate, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) elevated Bishop Herontii of Vinnytsia and Bratslav and Bishop Yurii of Donetsk and Mariupol to the rank of archbishops on 22 October 2005.

Kharkiv – On 21 October 2005 St. Demetrius Parish of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv and the Kharkiv Brotherhood of St. Andrew the First-called Apostle released a statement condemning the interference of the Ukrainian government in internal church life. They support the eventual unification of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, but “without any external pressure,” as the statement reads.

Ivano-Frankivsk – The Eparchial Council of the Eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in western Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk announced that they will not take part in the process of unification of the UAOC with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP). The council released this statement on 20 October 2005.

Russian Orthodox and Church Abroad Discuss Parishes in Odesa

Odesa– On 19 October 2005, in the Men’s Monastery of the Holy Dormition in southern Ukrainian Odesa, Metropolitan Ahafangel (Savvin) of Odesa and Izmail of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) received members of the Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) on the Dialogue with the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA). The press service of the ROC reports that the meeting dealt with questions concerning the future of parishes of the ROCA in the Odesa Eparchy of the UOC-MP. The members of the two committees also met with the head of the parishes of the Rusyn Orthodox Church Abroad in Ukraine, Bishop Ahafanhel (Pashkovskyi).
