Odesa – The Hierarchical Synod of the Rusyn (or Russian) True Orthodox Church (RTOC) is considering requests from clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan and Moscow patriarchates to be received into the RTOC. The hierarchs discussed this and other issues at their regular autumn meeting, headed by Archbishop Tykhon of Omsk and Siberia, which took place in southern Ukrainian Odesa from 27 October to 1 November 2005.

Vinnytsia – A new pagan temple will be constructed in central Ukrainian Vinnytsia according to modern standards. It will have the main worship space and the main office of the spiritual administration of the Church of Native Ukrainian Belief (CNUB), as umoloda.kiev.ua reported on 15 November 2005.

Moscow – On 15 November 2005, Patriarch Alexis II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, received a delegation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia and Kazakhstan, led by its new head, Archbishop Edmund Ratz. Patriarch Alexis II congratulated the archbishop on his new ministry. Before this appointment, Ratz had served for six years as a bishop of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ukraine. “I hope meetings between our faithful will become regular on all levels,” said the patriarch in conclusion.

Kyiv – The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) is not going to support any political party during Ukraine’s 2006 parliamentary elections, but it will bless everybody who is willing to work for the good of Ukraine. Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the UOC-MP, made this affirmation at a press conference held on 14 November 2005.

Kyiv-- Archimandrite Luka (Kovalenko) was ordained bishop of Vasylkiv and vicar of the Kyiv eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) on 13 November 2005 in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves.

Kyiv – The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) considers that St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv “should be given to the single patriarch of a united Kyivan church.” The UGCC press service repeated this position on 14 November 2005 in response to information posted by from-ua.com reporting that a group of Greek Catholics gathered on St. Sophia’s Square on 13 November demanding the transfer of St. Sophia’s to the UGCC.

Antoine Arjakovsky, director of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University in western Ukrainian Lviv, at the invitation of Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople participated in a Conference on Peace and Tolerance in Southeastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, held in Istanbul, 7-9 November 2005. During the course of the trip, Arjakovsky was also able to meet personally with the patriarch.

Kyiv – On 11 November 2005, the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine (UOBU) released a statement “On the importance of cooperation of the Orthodox church and the state in the propagation of family values and motherhood in society.” Having provided official statistics about the number of homeless children and teenagers who do not receive proper care, the UOBU concludes there is “a deep demographic crisis and hidden genocide against the Ukrainian nation.”

Lviv – A court in western Ukrainian Lviv on 23 June 2004 ruled that the “Argument Newspaper” had published untrue and harmful information regarding the Congregation of St. Josaphat the Martyr women’s religious community of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). The newspaper submitted an appeal, but the appeals court dismissed the appeal on 7 November 2005.

Kyiv – On 2 November 2005, Ukraine’s Parliament registered a proposed bill “On the introduction of changes to Ukraine’s law ‘On freedom of conscience and religious organizations.’” The author of the bill, National Deputy Volodymyr Spivachuk of the Socialist Party of Ukraine, proposes banning by law the activity of so-called “totalitarian religious sects.”

Kherson – The heads of various Christian churches and citizens of Nova Kakhovka, in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, have voiced their concern over recent efforts of the followers of the Transcendental Meditation movement, founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, to spread their message in society and the regional mass media. Kyiv – The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) blessed the opening of several monasteries and decided to open a new spiritual college. This occurred at a meeting presided at by Metropolitan Volodmyr (Sabodan), head of the UOC-MP, held at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves on 10 November 2005.

Crimea – New interreligious disputes have again arisen in southern Ukrainian Crimea. “As in previous years, interdenominational conflicts in Crimea have been caused by the attempts of the Ukrainian-Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate [UOC-MP] to take possession of all Christian historical and cultural monuments on the Crimean peninsula,” wrote Leonid Ivanov in an article posted by obkom.ua on 8 November 2005.

Lviv— Former Bishop Ihor Vozniak was enthroned as archbishop and head of the Lviv archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) on 10 November 2005 at St. George’s Cathedral in western Ukrainian Lviv. Though the residence of Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the UGCC, officially moved to Kyiv in August, the UGCC bishops decided that Lviv will remain an archeparchy headed by an archbishop.

Kyiv—Approximately 300 orphans and other children not living under parental care who are being raised in non-government institutions traveled to Kyiv to take part in The World of Childhood, the First All-Ukraine Festival of Children’s Creativity. U.S. State Department Reports on Religious Freedom in Ukraine, Works with RISU 11.11.2005, [16:49] // Foreign relations //
The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor of the U.S. Department of State on 8 November 2005 released its International Religious Freedom Report 2005 on Ukraine.
