Kyiv – With the blessing of Catholicos Ilia II, head of the Orthodox Church of Georgia, the Synodal Commission on Cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and Other Military Bodies in Ukraine of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) was recently visited by a delegation of Georgian Orthodox chaplains. Kyiv – On 25-26 November 2005, Ukrainians honored the memory of victims of forced famines, in particular the Holodomor (forced famine) of 1932-1933, and political repression. On 26 November at 16:00 a minute of silence and the action “Light the Candle” were announced all over Ukraine. Despite the fact that Ukraine received its independence 13 years ago, this was the first time that the victims of the forced famines and political repression were honored nation-wide. On that day panakhydas (memorial services) for those who died during the forced famines and as a result of political repression were held in Ukrainian churches.

Kherson – On 25 November 2005, Borys Silenkov, governor of southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, met with local religious leaders. Representatives of three branches of Orthodoxy, the Greek and Roman Catholic churches, and Presbyterian, Lutheran, Charismatic, Seventh-day Adventist, Pentecostal, and Baptist leaders were present at the meeting at the Kherson Regional Administration (KRA).

Odesa – A congress of the Odesa and Zaporizzhia eparchies of the Rusyn Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA) met in southern Ukrainian Odesa on 25 October 2005 to elect representatives for the upcoming 6th All-Abroad Sobor (Assembly). Among the 51 delegates was John Herbst, U. S. Ambassador to Ukraine, who was chosen to represent the laity at the upcoming sobor. Herbst is a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Protection in Malyn, in central Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region. RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 28 November.
President Signs Decree on Spirituality of Ukrainian Nation 29.11.2005, [15:53] // Church-state relations //
Kyiv – On 24 November 2005, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed Decree 1647/2005 “On special measures to enrich and develop the culture and spirituality of Ukrainian society.” According to the decree, one of the priority issues for Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers and central and local administrations is to further the enrichment and development of the culture and spirituality of Ukrainian society. The decree calls for, among other things, the creation of a National Council on Issues of Culture and Spirituality that will serve as a consultative and advisory structure within the president administration.

Odesa – The Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine (UOCU) and the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine (PSP) conducted a joint demonstration called “Orthodox-Progressive Square in Odesa.” The action took place on Kulykov Field in southern Ukrainian Odesa and was dedicated to the first anniversary of the Orange Revolution. The demonstrators learned that the UOCU and the PSP hope to be represented in Parliament after the upcoming elections. Radio Freedom reported this on 23 November 2005.
Greek Catholic Chapel in Kyiv to be Rebuilt 28.11.2005, [14:17] // UGCC //
Kyiv - The chapel which stood next to the construction site of the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and was destroyed by fire on 19 November will be restored. The press service of the UGCC, citing Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the UGCC, reported this on 23 November 2005.

Crimea – The City Council in southern Ukrainian Sevastopol (Crimea) has again refused to return to the local Roman Catholic community of St. Clement the building of the former church, where the Druzhba (“Friendship”) Cinema is located now. Kyiv – Almost 90,000 people celebrated the Day of Freedom on Independence Square in Kyiv on 22 November 2005. From now on this date will be a Ukrainian national holiday. The leaders of different religious confessions in Ukraine came to Independence Square to conduct a solemn prayer for Ukraine. The joint prayer for Ukraine was held before the Ukrainian politicians took the stage.

Kyiv – Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), together with other hierarchs who came to congratulate him on his 70th birthday, celebrated a solemn Divine Liturgy and joint prayer at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves Church of the Holy Dormition on 22 November 2005. Lutsk – The working group of the Council of Churches in northwestern Ukrainian Volyn (VCC) met in the Volyn Regional Administration (VRA) building on 21 November 2005. According to Archpriest Vitalii Sobko, press secretary of the Volyn Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), among the issues the group discussed were the participation of churches in events perpetuating the memory of victims of political repressions and starvation in Ukraine and the celebration of the first anniversary of Ukraine’s Orange Revolution.

Kyiv – Faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in Kyiv have made the assumption that their chapel, which was located next to the construction-site of the patriarchal cathedral, was set on fire. Priests and parishioners said they have no reason to suspect anybody in particular. Moreover, they said they have no grudge against those who did it and will pray for the criminals. Kyiv– The Kyiv parishes of the Roman Catholic Church have collected signatures to present to the Kyiv City Administration regarding “the revival of historical justice on Kostiolna Street,” as the Catholic Media Center reported on 21 November 2005. Among other points, the faithful raise the issue of the return of former worship buildings and other church property (on Kostiolna Street 13-a, 13-b, 13-v, 13-h, 13-d), which are communal property now and are not used appropriately, to St. Alexander’s Roman Catholic Church. The faithful of St. Alexander’s have been trying to have the former worship buildings returned since 1991.

Oradea Mare, Romania– At the invitation of Bishop Virgil Bercea of Oradea Mare, Romania, of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church (RGCC), Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), visited Romania on 19-20 November 2005. The head of the UGCC came to mark a historical event: the local Greek Catholics were returned their former church by representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Constantinopole— Ihumen (Abbot) Andrij Peshko on 22 November 2005 was elected unanimously by the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople as bishop of Krateia. He will serve as assistant to Metropolitan Constantine (Kostiantyn Bahan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and of the Ukrainian parishes belonging to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Bishop-elect Andrij was born in Ukraine and is now serving as a priest in Chicago, USA.

Moscow, 21 November 2005, Interfax- The U.S. advises its officials in Ukraine to go to the churches of “schismatics,” rather than of “canonical Orthodoxy,” said Archbishop Pavlo of Vyshhorod, head of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).
