30 May 2005/ www.forum18.org/Felix Corley-- In a new move, the SBU security police has told Forum 18 News Service that people barred entry by other CIS countries - including Russia - on religious and other grounds can now appeal against any visa bar to Ukraine. Appeals can be made either to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry or the SBU, Forum 18 was told.

Kyiv -- The Patriarchal Court of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) has found Metropolitan Mefodii (Kudriakov), head of the UAOC, guilty of systematically violating Orthodox canons and the UAOC’s statutes. The court decided that the violations should be discussed during the next national sobor (assembly) of the UAOC. This decision was made on 26 May 2005 in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv after the consistory of the Kharkiv and Poltava eparchy of the UAOC and a group of clergymen of the Ternopil eparchy filed a suit against the metropolitan.

Kyiv – The Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC–KP) has elected Archimandrite Chrisostomos (Bakomitros) as bishop of Khersones and exarch of the UOC-KP in Greece. The decision was passed on 12 May 2005. Donetsk– The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) “has no claims to any church or other property of [the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP)] in the region of Donetsk. [Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the UOC-KP] is only going to visit his homeland and his flock.” So wrote UOC-KP Bishop Yurii (Yurchyk) of Donetsk and Mariupol, responding to an open letter recently released by UOC-MP clergy and faithful protesting Patriarch Filaret’s planned visit to eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region. RISU received a copy of the bishop’s letter, addressed to UOC-MP Metropolitan Ilarion (Shukalo) of Donetsk and Mariupol, on 25 May 2005, the text of which follows.

Lviv—The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) together with other traditional churches will strongly defend the teaching of the subject of Christian ethics in Ukraine’s schools and protest “ethics,” which is proposed by the country’s Ministry of Education. This was the subject of a press conference held on 25 May 2005 in Lviv at the residence of the head of the UGCC.

Kyiv – Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC–KP), on 24 May 2005 led a moleben (prayer service) at the foundations of the historic Tithe Church in Kyiv. The date is the feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius on the Byzantine Julian calendar and the anniversary of the church’s dedication in 996. The UOC–KP supports the reconstruction of the church. According to UOC-KP Archbishop Dymytrii of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi, rector of the Kyiv Spiritual Seminary, “failure to reconstruct it means trampling our history.”

Lviv – On 23 May 2005, the Lviv regional organization of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) publicized an address in which it sharply criticized the decision of Ukraine’s Ministry of Education to introduce ethics as a subject in public schools beginning next academic year. The Christian Democrats called all who care to make a decisive civic protest against the ministry’s intentions to discontinue the teaching of Christian ethics.

Lviv – Various commissions of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) have spoken out against the introduction of a mandatory ethics course into public school programs beginning next school year, as proposed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education. This was the content of an address publicized on 23 May 2005 by the UGCC press service. The address says that the content of the ethics course “will systematically and deliberately destroy and demoralize children’s souls.” The UGCC commissions are outraged by the proposal to study so-called “safe sex” in the sixth grade and what is or is not appropriate in sexual relations. Instead, they propose a program on the basics of Christian morals.

Donetsk – The visit to Donetsk of Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), planned for late May “is political in character and aimed strictly at provoking and deepening interdenominational animosity.” So reads an open letter to the leaders of eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region released by the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). Kharkiv – A car race from Ukraine to Georgia started in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv on 22 May 2005 as part of the Year of Georgia in Ukraine. The race should prove the solidarity of the ancient Christian peoples of Ukraine and Georgia, and the support Ukrainians have for the independent policies of the Georgian government. Kyiv – In an interview with a Russian newspaper, Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), spoke of the prospects for the church’s development and the unification of churches into a single national church of Ukraine. The cardinal expects a clear following of the constitutional law on the equality of all churches from Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko. Lutsk – A new department of the administration of the northwestern Ukrainian Volyn Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP), the Pilgrimage Service, was created following an initiative by Bishop Mykhail (Zinkevych) of Lutsk and Volyn. The new structure will organize pilgrimages to Orthodox memorials, renew and propagate pilgrimage traditions and popularize the religious memorials of Volyn and Ukraine. So said Archpriest Vitalii Sobko, press secretary of the UOC-KP Eparchy of Volyn, at a press conference at the Eparchial Administration on 20 May 2005.

Kyiv– A group of Buddhist activists led a picket of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU, in its Ukrainian acronym) building in Kyiv on 20 May 2005. They demanded cancellation of the prohibition to enter Ukraine for the famous Buddhist teacher Junsei Terasawa, and apparently got what they wanted.

Kyiv– Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC – MP), awarded Volodymyr Stelmakh, head of the National Bank of Ukraine, with the church’s first degree order of St. Prince Volodymyr at his residence in the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves on 20 May 2005, celebrated as Bankers’ Day. In addition, Anatolii Shapovalov, deputy head of the National Bank, and Mykhail Hoikhman, adviser to the head of the National Bank, received the UOC-MP orders of Blessed Nestor the Chronicler.
