Archbishop Foley Speaks on Media in Education 22.03.2005, [12:13] // RCC //
Kyiv- 21 March 2005 (Zenit.org)- The Holy See appealed to European governments not to overlook the importance of the media in the education of children as well as of the general public. The spokesman for the Church's position at the 7th European Ministerial Conference on Mass Media Policy, held here March 10-11, was Archbishop John Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. "We were disappointed to note," said Archbishop Foley in his address to the assembly, "that there is in the draft Action Plan no mention of media education, for children or for the general public."
Kyiv City Council Selective in Granting Land for Church Construction 21.03.2005, [14:09] // Church-state relations //
Kyiv – In a session of 17 March 2005, the Kyiv City Council granted .9 hectares on Hlybochytska Street in Kyiv to the Religious Administration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (popularly known as Mormons) for construction of a prayer house with a Sunday school. The church was rented the land for 25 years. An hour later, the deputies refused to vote in favor of two decisions that promised land transfer to the religious community of Jehovah’s Witnesses and to the All-Ukraine Union of Christians of the Evangelical Faith–Pentecostals.

Kyiv– Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko met with the head of the board of trustees of the European Jewish Congress, Viacheslav Kantor. During the meeting, Yushchenko stressed that there will never be a “national question” in Ukraine and stated his condemnation of any manifestations of xenophobia and antiSemitism. Sevastopol– A statement sent by the Union of Orthodox Citizens to the New Region information agency stresses that Russian President Vladimir Putin should bring up the issue of the church unity of Ukraine and Russia during his upcoming visit to Kyiv. nr2.ru posted the news on 17 March 2005.
Lviv Region Leads in Number of Religious Organizations 21.03.2005, [13:57] // Church-state relations //
Lviv– According to data of early 2005 made public on 16 March by Roman Kurash, head of the Lviv Regional Department on Religious Matters, more than 10% of Ukraine’s religious organizations are in far western Ukraine’s Lviv region. Kurash also discussed the current status of interdenominational relations in the region, the preservation of sacred objects, and related issues.

Kyiv– Archbishop John Patrick Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, met with the representatives of the Roman Catholic media on 15 March 2005 in the Roman Catholic Major Seminary in Vorzel (Kyiv region). He called them to live in obedience, always speak the truth, and work creatively and with enthusiasm, for, he said, we Christians carry “the most important message for this world.”
Yushchenko Invites Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Kyiv 18.03.2005, [11:54] // Foreign relations //
Kyiv– Following a request by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, State Secretary Oleksandr Zinchenko paid a visit to Istanbul, Turkey, on 15 March 2005 to meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Zinchenko delivered a personal message from the president, in which Yushchenko thanked the patriarch for his constant attention and sympathy towards Ukraine and invited him to visit Kyiv. At the same time, Zinchenko stressed that the patriarch and his church command unquestionable authority and deep respect in Ukraine.
Ministers’ Cabinet Permits Archaeology on Site of Historic Tithe Church 18.03.2005, [11:53] // Church-state relations //
Kyiv – Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has granted permission for the Ministry of Culture and the Kyiv City Administration to conduct archaeological research on the site of the ancient foundations of Kyiv’s historic Tithe Church. The research is to conclude whether it is necessary to build a museum above the church’s foundations. This order was issued by the Cabinet of Ministers on 12 March 2005.
Yushchenko Cancels Legislation on Identity Codes 18.03.2005, [11:51] // Church-state relations //
Kyiv – Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on 10 March 2005 cancelled two decrees signed by former President Leonid Kuchma regarding the use of identity codes for Ukrainian citizens. The intention to use the codes set out a wave of protest from Orthodox faithful in 2004.

Kyiv – “It is obvious that Lent is not just a diet. It is, above all, a change of world-view.” Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Issues Mykola Tomenko spoke about the Christian time of preparation for Easter in a story posted by kmu.gov.ua on 14 March 2005.
