Lutsk—The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine liquidated the country’s National Committee on Religious Matters, among 13 other committees, on 12 February 2005. State officials, and Orthodox, Protestant and Catholic representatives commented on the committee in a story posted by RISU’s Ukrainian-language site on 22 March 2005.
UOC–MP Orthodox Head Meets Constantinople Representatives 25.03.2005, [19:06] // UOC-MP //
Kyiv – Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP) met with two representatives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople on 22 March 2005 at his residence in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. The representatives were Archbishop Vsevolod (Majdanski), head of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church USA, headed by Metropolitan Konstiantyn (Bahan), and Bishop Hlarion (Rudnik), assistant bishop for the metropolitan of Portugal and Spain.
Chapel Opens in Odesa AIDS Hospital 25.03.2005, [11:22] // Charitable activities //
Odesa – A regional AIDS hospital center has been opened in southern Ukrainian Odesa. The center was repaired with funds from the American government. In addition to furnished hospital rooms and cutting-edge medical technology, the new hospital center has a little chapel, where priests of various Christian denominations will be able to meet with the patients. Building to be Given to Kharkiv Karaites 25.03.2005, [11:20] // Karaite //
Kharkiv – A decision has been approved to transfer a kenasa (worship) building to the Karaite community in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv. The Karaites are an offshoot of Judaism, who are not ethnically Jewish but are Tatar and recognize only the Torah. RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 21 March 2005.
Orthodox of Ukraine Complain of Government Interference in Church 25.03.2005, [11:19] // UOC-MP //
Kirovohrad – The civic movement For Holy Rus and the Orthodox Faith, the Way of the Orthodox organization based in central Ukrainian Kirovohrad, the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine and the Orthodox Brotherhood of Alexander Nevsky claim that official Kyiv is interfering with the affairs of the church. This was the subject of an open letter to the Ukrainian authorities. Pravoslavie.ru posted the news on 21 March 2005.

Moscow-- Metropolitan Kirill (Gundyaev) of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church, sent a letter to Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, condemning the activities of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in southern Ukraine. UOC-MP Orthodox Head Meets Russian President Putin 24.03.2005, [12:18] // UOC-MP //
Kyiv– During an official visit to Ukraine on 19 March 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP). “We always support friendly relations with the canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine,” said Putin at the meeting, “and Orthodoxy is one of the important cornerstones of our spiritual relations.” Metropolitan Volodymyr said that interdenominational relations in Ukraine today are difficult, and that he hopes the situation will improve with the new government.

Kyiv– Reports have come in from several regions of Ukraine about faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC–KP) making claims to churches in the property of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP). A representative of the UOC–MP press service reported this to the Interfax news agency on 18 March 2005.
Autocephalous Orthodox Sobor in Lviv Hopes Constantinople will Help Unify Ukrainian Orthodoxy 24.03.2005, [10:54] // UAOC //
Lviv – Participants of the eighth Lviv Eparchial Sobor (Assembly) of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) have requested that Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko call Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople to support the unification process of all branches of Orthodoxy in Ukraine. The sobor took place on 3 March with participation of delegates from more than 350 religious communities of the Lviv eparchy of the UAOC. RISU has received the documents of the Sobor on 21 March 2005.
No Need to Fear Yushchenko, Says Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi 23.03.2005, [14:37] // Jewish Communities //
