Kyiv -- On 29 June 2005, members of Ukraine’s Parliament participated in parliamentary hearings on “Freedom of Conscience and Identification Codes.” The national deputies arrived at the conclusion that a refusal to accept identification codes and pay taxes because of religious convictions is artificial. According to tax administration officials, the taxation system has nothing to do with religious issues and no one should avoid paying taxes.

Eucharistic Sobor in Lviv Calls for Polish-Ukrainian Peace and Unity

Lviv -- The All-Ukrainian Eucharistic Sobor (assembly) culminated in western Ukrainian Lviv on 26 June 2005 in a Liturgy celebrated by Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), together with hierarchs of the Roman Catholic Church and the UGCC. The sobor’s main accomplishment was a joint statement on reconciliation between the Polish and Ukrainian people and a call for peace between the brotherly nations.

Religious Community in Korosten Asks to Stop Persecution of Mayor

Korosten, Zhytomyr region -- The church leaders and faithful of Korosten, in central Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region, have written a letter to Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Volodymyr Lytvyn, speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, asking for a stop to the persecution of the mayor of Korosten, Volodymyr Moskalenko. This news was reported by the Unian information agency on 25 June 2005.

Ternopil Governor Closes Church until Orthodox and Greek Catholics Settle Conflict

Ternopil -- Ivan Stoiko, head of western Ukraine’s Ternopil regional administration, issued a decree to temporarily close the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in the village of Zazdrist, Terebovlia district, until the conflict between the local communities of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) is settled. 50,000 Join in Kyiv “Jesus March”

Kyiv— An estimated 50,000 people joined in the “Jesus March” in Kyiv on 12 June 2005. According the Christian Broadcasting Network, Christians marched in the rain praying and worshipping God. The “Jesus March” brought Christians of all backgrounds together to be a witness to the government and the nation about the need to follow the Bible's principles, and so get the good results. The marchers met on Independence Square, site of the massive protests last December that sparked a change in the government. Now, believers say their Christian unity will have an even greater impact.

Jewish Organization in Zhytomyr Vandalized

Zhytomyr-- On the morning of 26 June 2005, Jews of central Ukrainian Zhytomyr were shocked to discover spray-painted Fascist swastikas covering the walls of the local office of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine. Nazi symbols surrounded by circles appeared on the walls and door of the regional office of this country-wide Jewish institution.

Kyiv -- “The national church in Ukraine already exists,” said Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), in an interview for the Kyiv Associated Press office, released on 26 June 2005. He said Ukraine has the Orthodox church which originated during the reign of St. Prince Volodymyr the Great who baptized Rus. According to Metropolitan Volodymyr, the term “creation” which is regularly used today cannot be applied in relation to the church at all.

Crimea -- The association Crimea-Karailar and the all-Ukrainian center for culture and information Ukraine-World on 24 June 2005 held a round-table discussing the problems of the Karaites cultural heritage and sent a letter to President Yushchenko asking him to address this question. The Karaites are an offshoot of Judaism who are not ethnically Jewish but are Tatar and recognize only the Torah.

Council of Churches and Religious Organizations Discusses Morality, Church-State Relations

Kyiv -- At a meeting on 24 June 2005 in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations discussed social morality and church-state and interreligious relations. The council prepared a letter to Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and the Ukrainian Parliament and NGOs asking to address the problems of “double registration” of statutes of religious organizations and charities and the development of church-state relations.

Rusyn Orthodox Bishop in Ukraine Releases Statement on Negotiations with Russian Orthodox

Odesa -- Bishop Ahafanhel of Tavria and Odesa of the Rusyn Orthodox Church-Abroad (ROC-A) has released a statement on the unification of his church with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Deputies of the Ternopil City Council blamed "Communists and Jews" for an anti-Fascist campaign that took place in this western Ukrainian city last week, reported journalists from the AEN internet site on 23 June 2005. During the night of the protest, unidentified persons took down all signs indicating the street name on the recently-named "Street of the Soldiers' Division "SS Halychyna". That particular name was given to one of the city's street in accordance with the special permission of the Ternopil City Council.

Orthodox and Greek Catholics Can Co-exist in Kyiv, Says Greek Catholic Head

Lviv-- The co-existence of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate "has no ecclesiological or canonical obstacles," said Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the UGCC on 24 June 2005. The cardinal was responding to recent statements of the Russian Orthodox regarding “the canonical, ecclesiastic and pastoral unacceptability” of the transfer of the UGCC head’s residence to Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.

First Eucharistic Sobor Starts in Lviv

Lviv-- The 1st All-Ukrainian Eucharistic Sobor (assembly) started in western Ukrainian Lviv on 24 June 2005. Since 2005 was announced by the late Pope John Paul II as the Year of the Holy Eucharist, the sobor gathered representatives from all over Ukraine to share their eucharistic experiences, participate in a scholarly conference at the Ukrainian Catholic University, and join in prayer.

Union of Charismatic Churches of Ukraine Joins Pentecostal World Fellowship

Kyiv -- The Union of Independent Christian Charismatic Churches of Ukraine of the Full Gospel joined the Pentecostal World Fellowship. “We want to communicate with all the Pentecostal and Charismatic unions throughout the world. We are striving for unity in reality,” said Anatolii Havryliuk, president of the union. “Communicating with other churches, we would like to find what we are still lacking and offer the resources that we have, particularly missionary service and bible studies,” he stressed. Kyiv - From 15 through 17 June 2005, bishops, clergy and faithful from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean, representing nearly 40 countries, arrived in Kyiv to participate in the first sobor [assembly] of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church-Canonical (UAOC-C). The church's head, Metropolitan Moisei, was elevated to the rank of patriarch during the sobor.

Court Decides Zhytomyr Community Can Keep Church and Change Orthodox Jurisdiction

Malyn– On 1 June 2005, the Supreme Court of Ukraine canceled the decision of former Zhytomyr governor Ryzhuk, according to which the community of the Protection of the Mother of God in the town of Malyn, in central Ukraine's Zhytomyr region, could not move to the jurisdiction of the Rusyn Orthodox Church-Abroad (ROC-A). By this decision the court found the transfer of the community from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate to the Rusyn Orthodox Church Abroad legal. The community is also entitled to keep the church which was also claimed by part of the community which decided not to move to the ROC-A.

Pope Urges Support of Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine

Vatican, 23 June 2005, zenith.org— Pope Benedict XVI appealed for help for the Eastern-rite Catholics of Ukraine, in order to promote reconciliation with the rest of the country's Christians, most of whom are Orthodox. Moscow -- The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is concerned over what it called “the expansion of Catholics in Ukraine.” Metropolitan Kirill (Gundyaev) of Smolensk and Kalinigrad, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church, stated this during a meeting with the Roman Catholic Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, in Russia’s capital, Moscow, on 22 June 2005.
