Ternopil-- Representatives of the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) community in the village of Zazdrist in western Ukraine's Ternopil region had the opportunity to pass an open letter to Mykola Tomenko, Ukraine's vice prime minister for humanitarian issues. Tomenko, in turn, suggested two ways out of the property conflict that has involved the Greek Catholic and Orthodox communities of the village at a press conference held during his visit to the Ternopil Regional Administration on 28 July 2005.

Kyiv – A press conference of the Arraid organization, entitled “Muslims against terror” took place on 28 July 2005 at the UNIAN news agency. The participants of the conference told journalists the position of Muslims and Islam concerning the problem of terrorism and its consequences, and tried to outline ways of preventing terrorist activity, which has recently grown significantly. Arraid is the Ukrainian Muslim Interregional Association of Civic Organizations.

UOC–KP Orthodox Synod Accepts Moldovan Parishes

Kyiv– Among its decisions, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC – KP) has accepted nine parishes in the neighboring Republic of Moldova into the UOC–KP, uniting them in a separate eparchy. The synod met at the residence of Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the UOC-KP, on 27 July 2005.

Kyiv – Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC – KP), visited the Libyan Jamahiriya on 24–26 July 2005, following an invitation from the Association of Global Islam Call. During his visit to this Islamic country, the hierarch met with a number of state, religious and civic figures. His goal was not only to strengthen Libyan-Ukrainian interstate relations, but to enliven interchurch and interreligious communication and understanding.

Zazdrist, Ternopil region-- Approximately 50 members of the Greek Catholic community of the village of Zazdrist in western Ukraine picketed the Ternopil Regional Administration, awaiting the arrival of Mykola Tomenko, Ukraine's vice prime minister for humanitarian issues. Greek Catholic Representative Calls Russian Orthodox to Tolerance

Lviv – During a recent visit to Kazan, Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexis II stated that he considers a visit of the Pope to Moscow impossible until the Vatican rejects proselytism on the territory of Russia. The patriarch also named "the rebirth of the Union [i. e. the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, UGCC] in western regions of Ukraine,” allegedly accompanied by violence and seizure of churches, as an obstacle. Fr. Volodymyr Havrylenko, protopresbyter of Yavoriv in western Ukraine's Lviv region, has commented on the patriarch's statement, proceeding from historical facts. Christian Democrats to Help Introduce Religious Ethics into Schools

Kyiv – The Christian Democratic Party of Ukraine (CDPU) has promised to help the Ministry of Education introduce the subject with the working title "Religious Ethics" into school curricula. “Only thus will we be able in the long run to build a society based on Christian principles and promote tolerant relations between people,” said Vitalii Zhuravskyi, leader of the CDPU. Ternopil – Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic, apostolic nuncio to Ukraine, gave Ternopil Mayor Bohdan Levkiv a diploma from Pope Benedict XVI. This took place during a pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia, a western Ukrainian holy place. The diploma says, among other things: “His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI of Rome grants his apostolic blessing to Bohdan Levkiv, requesting for him the grace of growing in faith and love under the protection of the Most Holy Virgin Mary.” This was reported by Radio Ternopil 106.1 FM on 26 July 2005.

Univ Dormition Lavra May Add Museum, Historic Complex

Lviv – The Regional Council Committee for Land and Administrative Organization in western Ukrainian Lviv has decided to propose that the regional council consider allocating land to the Dormition Lavra (Monastery) of the Studite Order of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Univ to create a museum and historical complex and to construct a cemetery for monks on the territory in the property of the village council of Slovity, in Zolochiv district in western Ukraine's Lviv region. Medzhybizh – A number of Israeli Hasidic activists arrived in the village of Medzhybizh in central Ukraine’s Khmelnytsk region to restore old Jewish gravestones and prepare the infrastructure for a future pilgrimage center. The street leading to the Jewish cemetery was renamed in honor of Baal Shem Tov. A number of small hotels for Hasidic faithful and a new synagogue of white brick were constructed.
