Sevastopol – A new film about the 19th century Cathedral of St. Volodymyr in southern Ukrainian Khersones will be released in early spring. Filming was completed recently, and director Ihor Krasovskyi talked about the film in a story posted on Pravoslavie.ru on 26 January 2005.

More than 30,000 Religious Organizations Registered in Ukraine

Kyiv – During 2004 the number of religious organizations in Ukraine grew by 950 to a total of 30,805, said Viktor Bondarenko, head of Ukraine’s National Committee on Religious Matters. According to Bondarenko, the absolute majority of the organizations, 29,590, are communities of the faithful, lower-level links of religious organizations. Russian Orthodox Representatives Satisfied with Patriarch’s meeting with Yushchenko

Moscow– Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) were satisfied with the results of the 24 January 2005 meeting between Patriarch Alexis II, head of the ROC, and Ukraine’s new President Viktor Yushchenko in Moscow. “The meeting was successful. The fact, that it lasted twice as long as planned testifies to that,” Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, official representative of the Moscow Patriarchate, said, commenting on Patriarch Alexis’s conversation with Viktor Yushchenko. The archpriest thought it important that Ukraine’s president expressed a wish to meet the patriarch of Moscow on his first day in office.

Cabinet of Ministers to Support Repair of Cave Monastery

Kyiv– Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers issued a decree on 24 January 2005 granting 2 million hryvnias (approximately $US 380,000) to the Ministry of Culture to conduct emergency repairs on the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. According to the document, funds were allotted from the Reserve Fund of the State Budget. The Ministry of Culture is to submit a report to the Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Finance, the State Building Company and the State Treasury on the usage of the funds by the end of 2005.

Lviv, Kharkiv Celebrate Unity Day Together

Kharkiv, Lviv– A common celebration of Unity Day took place in western Ukrainian Lviv on 22 January 2005, following an initiative of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) Eparchy of Kharkiv and Poltava and the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). Representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and UAOC local communities participated in the celebration, as did a delegation of Kharkiv’s Christian intelligentsia. Unity Day celebrates the declaration of the first independent Ukrainian state of the modern era on 18 January 1918.

Kyiv– A presentation of the Ukrainian Center for Islamic Studies, a new all-Ukrainian civic organization, took place in Kyiv on 20 January 2005. Many noted Ukrainian scholars specializing in Islam and the history and culture of the Near and Middle East joined the organization. Dr. Mykola Kiriushko, a noted scholar of Islam, heads the organization. One of the center’s priorities is to spread accurate information about Islam.

Kyiv– The leader of the Party of the Regions and former presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych has no intention of abandoning his efforts to strengthen the status of the Russian language in Ukraine and protecting the Orthodox Church. He said this during a broadcast on the Ukraina TV channel. This was reported by Interfax on 21 January 2005.

Moscow– Metropolitan Kirill (Gundyaev) of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church, hopes that new Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko “will help maintain the traditionally high level of interconnections between our peoples.” Mospat.ru posted the metropolitan’s greeting to Yushchenko on 21 January 2005.

Krakow, Poland— On the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the prisoners of the Nazi Concentration Camp at Auschwitz, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko recalled “there will never be room in Ukraine for antisemitism.” Yushchenko spoke on 27 January 2005 at Krakow’s Slowenski National Theatre at a memorial concert in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

Leaders of Jewish Communities in Ukraine and Russia Discuss Relations

Moscow- Vadim Rabinovich, president of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress, visited Moscow on 24 January 2005. Rabinovich met with Vladimir Slutzker, president of the Russian Jewish Congress. The leaders discussed the battle with anti-Semitism and terror and ways to perpetuate the memory of the Holocaust. They said that they will make every effort to spread their spheres of cooperation and strengthen relations between Russia and Ukraine.
