Donetsk– Karl Gustav Severin, a renowned evangelist from Sweden, spoke at the Sunday services of the Christian Church Word of Life in the Youth Palace of far eastern Ukrainian Donetsk on 20 February 2005. Having visited over 50 countries, Severin has a special relationship with Ukraine and always speaks of the country and its people with great warmth and kindness. “I am even more Ukrainian than you are,” the preacher joked when talking to the congregation. “You were born Ukrainians, while I chose to be Ukrainian.”

UOC–MP Orthodox Faithful Join Protest of Ukraine’s Possible Entry into EU and NATO

Kyiv – Approximately 500 supporters of the Communist Party (CPU) held demonstrations at Ukraine’s Presidential Secretariat on 21 February 2005, demanding a rejection of policies Ukraine has declared for joining the EU and NATO. About 100 faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP) held a prayer service next to the protest. According to the participants of the prayer service, they also came to the secretariat building to protest NATO entry and to support a pro-Russian policy for Ukraine.

MP and Security Service Head Discuss Problems of Protestants in Kyiv

Kyiv– National Deputy Leonid Chernovetskyi, head of the Christian Liberal Party of Ukraine (CLPU), and Oleksandr Turchynov, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), discussed problems of Christian churches in Kyiv. Chernovetskyi’s press service reports that the deputy informed Turchynov of problems “the capital’s authorities create for Christian communities.” Korespondent.net posted this information on 17 February 2005.

Pora Civic Group Protests Occupation of Autocephalous Orthodox Premises in Kyiv

Kyiv – Activists of the Pora (It’s Time) civic group and of the National Alliance group started a protest at the premises of the Patriarchate Office of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) on 15 February 2005. The reason for the protests was the earlier occupation of the premises by a group of supporters of UAOC head Metropolitan Mefodii (Kudriakov). Pora organized a press conference in Kyiv on 16 February to discuss the issues.

Yushchenko and Cardinal Husar Discuss Improving Church/State Relations

Lviv– During his trip to Lviv on 16 February 2005, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko visited the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s (UGCC) Cathedral of St. George. The president also talked for an hour with Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the UGCC. The cardinal acquainted the president with a group of documents regarding the improvement of church-state relations.

Scientologists Concerned with Human Rights in Ukraine

Kyiv– The Church of Scientology held a conference was in Kyiv’s Ukrinform office, where the booklet “What is a human right?” was presented. The book was published in the Ukrainian language and advertises the activity of the Church of Scientology and the international movement Youth for Human Rights. Sedmitsia reported the news on 16 February 2005.

Kharkiv– The regional administration of eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv was picketed by faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) on 16 February 2005. The faithful said that they went out on the central square of the city to protect the shrine, the Dormition Cathedral, which was transferred to them by a decision of the region’s former governor.

UOC-KP Orthodox Church did not Approve Interchurch Council Document

Kyiv – The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) did not approve a document on church-state relations made public by the Ukrainian Interchurch Council (UIC) on 14 February 2005. RISU received an official statement from the UOC-KP regarding the matter on 16 February.

Liquidated Religion Committee “Had to be Changed,” Says Cardinal Husar

Lviv– Ukraine’s National Committee on Religious Matters, liquidated on 12 February, “had to be changed.” This is the opinion of Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, who discussed the matter at a press-conference held at his residence in western Ukrainian Lviv on 14 February 2005.

Interchurch Council Calls for Development of Church-state Interaction

Kyiv – The Ukrainian Interchurch Council (UIC) has called Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko and the government to develop new mechanisms of church-state interaction. This is discussed in an address made public by the coordinator of the UIC, Bishop Volodymyr Hrabar, during a press-conference in the agency Interfax-Ukraine on 14 February 2005.
