Kharkiv – The Cathedral of the Dormition in Kharkiv was rightly given to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP), said Kharkiv’s Mayor Volodymyr Shumilkin at a press conference. This news was posted on 25 February 2005 by pravoslavye.org.ua.

Attempts at Independent Orthodox Church Doomed to Failure, Say Orthodox Citizens

Kyiv– “Attempts at creating an independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine will only weaken the schismatics and strengthen the canonical Orthodox church of the country.” This comment on a recent initiative by Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), was given by the Union of Orthodox Citizens. On 23 February, Patriarch Filaret suggested forming a single National Ukrainian Orthodox Church by uniting the UOC–KP with the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). This was reported by Interfax on 25 February 2005.

Kyiv Mayor’s Office Publicizes Plans for Capital’s Spiritual Life

Kyiv– On 24 February 2005, the City Council of Kyiv approved a program for promoting democracy, civic society and patriotic conscience, and establishing principles of morality and spirituality for 2005 – 2006. The program is to be implemented by the Main Administration for Internal Policy of the Kyiv Mayor’s Office. Almost a third of the program deals with the activity and development of religious communities of the capital.

Rome to Canonize Two Ukrainians in October

Vatican— Two Ukrainians of Polish origin are among five people to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church on 23 October. Jozef Bilczewski (1860-1923) was archbishop of Lviv of the Latins. Blessed Zygmunt Gorazdowski (1845-1920) was a diocesan priest who belonged to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lviv. Zenit.org posted the news on 24 February 2005.

Kyiv- The Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC–KP) is calling the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) to union and asking the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP) to start peaceful relations. Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the UOC-KP, spoke about this at a press conference held in his residence on 23 February 2005.

Orthodox of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to Conduct Major Religious Manifestation

Kyiv – Orthodox civic organizations of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus are preparing to start a way of the cross (religious walk) through cities of the three countries soon. The walk is to end in Moscow on 17 July, the day the last Russian emperor, Tsar Nicholas II, was killed, together with members of his family. This event will be a demonstration of unity and of the fact that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP) faithful refuse to accept the idea of separating from the Moscow Patriarchate. This was reported on 23 February 2005 by the Interfax news agency.

Kyiv to Finance Restoration of Churches throughout Ukraine

Kyiv– The Kyiv City Administration intends to allocate 8.396 million hryvnias (approximately $ US 1.5 million ) in 2005 for the restoration of churches. This is noted in the program of social and economic development for Kyiv in 2005. The news was posted on Pravoslavie.ru on 22 February 2005.

President Approves Law Forbidding Privatization of Memorials

Kyiv– Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko approved a law “On a temporary ban on privatization of memorials of cultural heritage” on 21 February2005. The law comes into effect on the day of its publication. Some buildings used for worship will, most likely, be considered in this ban.
