Ukrainian Cardinals, President Bid Pope Farewell

Vatican– Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and his wife, Kateryna, attended the funeral of the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican on 8 April 2005. Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and Cardinal Marian Jaworski, head of the Roman Catholic Bishops' Conference of Ukraine, concelebrated the Mass. Cardinal Husar also participated in a special prayer service after the Mass conducted by heads of the various Eastern Catholic churches.

Lviv – Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic churches of Ukraine held commemorative religious services on 8 April 2005, the day of Pope John Paul II’s funeral, in Lviv, Kyiv, and other cities throughout the country.

Lviv– Approximately 5000 faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic churches made a prayer walk through the streets of Lviv on 7 April 2005, stopping at the places the late Pope John Paul II visited in June 2001. The event was organized by students of the Ukrainian Catholic University.

Kyiv– A way of the cross (religious procession/demonstration) took place in Kyiv on 6 April 2005. The participants protested the state’s interference in the internal affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP). The faithful of the church spoke of a possible transfer of part of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC–KP), because the part in question was recently closed to visitors. The Orthodox Brotherhood of Ukraine organized the demonstration.

Vatican – Lviv – Cardinal Marian Jaworski, head of the Roman Catholic Bishops' Conference of Ukraine, was with Pope John Paul II in his last hours, when he served Mass and anointed the body of the Pope. On 5 April 2005, the cardinal addressed the faithful of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine with a letter of condolence, in which he called the reign of John Paul II “a great pontificate.”

Christians of Odesa Pray for Late Pope

Odesa – Condolences from representatives of Christian communities in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region on the death of Pope John Paul II keep coming to Roman Catholic Bronislaw Bernacki of that church’s Odesa and Simferopol diocese. RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 6 April 2005.

500 Trees to be Planted in Lviv in Pope’s Memory

Lviv – On the territory of the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God in the Sykhiv neighborhood of western Ukrainian Lviv, 500 maple trees will be planted on 9 April 2005. The late Pope John Paul II led a rally gathering hundreds of thousands of youth in that location in June 2001. A street in Lviv will also be named after the late Pope. Church Property Disagreements Persist in Ternopil

Ternopil– Disagreements over church ownership between Greek Catholics and Orthodox and among various Orthodox groups have intensified in recent months in western Ukraine's Ternopil region. This was the subject of a meeting gathering representatives of various churches and the state held on the premises of the Ternopil Regional Administration on 5 April 2005.

Ternopil – One of the streets or squares in western Ukrainian Ternopil will be renamed to honor Pope John Paul II. This decision was reached by the deputies of the Ternopil City Council on 5 April 2005.

Lviv in Mourning on Day of Pope’s funeral

Lviv – Lviv is to pay its last respects to the city’s honorary citizen, Pope John Paul II. The mourning was announced by Zynovii Siryk, secretary of the Lviv City Council. An appropriate disposition is being prepared by Mayor Lubomyr Buniak. RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 5 April 2005.
